Use the "add a non-steam game to my library" feature. Launch the game in Steam and you should be able to still use the screenshot feature, unless it is a DOSBox game.
OK, messed around with this. It doesn't pick up the Steam overlay and the screenshot hotkey won't work.

You'll just have to believe me that it's a pretty game.

http://www.fraps.com/ ?

I think I took some screenshots of the new one when I played it, haven't played the old one via Steam, though I think I grabbed it when it was free.

Bummer dude. I've had this problem many times too with non-Steam games. I'm really hoping they allow screenshots in the upcoming GOG Galaxy client.

I have had a beard long enough that I braided it once. I wish I had gotten a picture before I took it out.

so I noticed that Dragon Age Origins actually takes screenshots for you at important parts of the story. This is pretty interesting, as even if you're not into taking screenshots yourself, the game is creating a little photo album of your adventure for you. What other games do this?

The PS4 now auto-grabs a screenshot whenever a trophy unlocks.

that's pretty brilliant. Steam should/could do something similar w/ achievements. I'd like that.
