hey all...so I made it through MGS4...it must be the easiest of all the series, I think I read that somewhere.
I bought MGS3 Subsistence and I plan on playing the original games which are included. I will also buy MGS2 Subsistence soon.
right now I'm playing the 1st PSX game and it's a lot tougher than MGS4. I'm in the Armory getting the sniper rifle to save Merill (I know she'll be gone when I get back.)
anyway, I just wonder what's in store for the first 2 games before the PSX game and what MGS2&3 are like in terms of difficulty.
honestly I'm not that great at video games...so I'm just hoping these won't be so hard that it'll ruin the fun for me.
I dont know for sure because I could only ever finish #1. I am kinda A.D.D these days since I have so many games. Part 1 was just so damn compelling though it was hard to put down. I really need to put my money to use and finish #4. I heard the ending is just amazing!
Personally I never could get into the first two games, they just felt too dated for me, so I can't really tell you anything about those.
MGS 2&3 are moderately challenging, 3 more so than 2 thanks to the lack of a radar. They're managable though, and once you get through them once then any other playthroughs should be a breeze. I can get through any of the first three MGS games in one sitting, god they're so good...

Pretty much my feeling exactly. The first MGS is still my favourite game of all time, and as such I decided to play the older ones (in thier nes forms). No matter how much I wanted to, I just couldn't get into em.

The only way to deactivate the ray beam and fight back the vampire alien threat is with a complicated series of foot patterns on the device's control board that looks remarkably like a DDR pad. We will all praise this man for saving our lives and buy him a mountain of stuffed animals.
The two MSX titles (on the MGS3 Subsistence disc) are difficult in different ways to the 3D titles. Challenge wise I think all of the games are pretty level, but I found it a little tricky to click into some of the more "puzzle" like elements, ie. find item A and use with scenario B. I liken it to the old point and click adventure titles.
MGS3 is perhaps the hardest but that's arguable. MGS4 allows you to buy weaponary on the fly and MGS1 is reasonably easy with the radar system. They all have different skews on stealth and then it depends on how you play (ie. not using bullets), I would hedge my bets on MGS3. The game's difficult felt very much like the difficult of a respectable, tough-but-fair platformer from the 8,16 bit days.
I've played them all through. After playing European Extreme mode on MGS2, MGS 3 felt like a walk in the park. Since I was already used to not using my radar, and the shitty camera system (let's face it, it's cinematic, but as useful as a chocolate fireguard. You can't see jack. By the time you see somebody it's too late most of the time, which forces you into tip-toeing everywhere until you learn the guards movements).
MGS3 subsistance added the 3D camera which is exactly the same as MGS4. Playing MGS3 an MGS4 now is a walk in the park.
The first MGS game isn't that hard either. I completed it three times in one day once.
I think it really helps if you played MGS1 first then all the others in succession. They always build on each other. IE MGS2 adding some CQC and the hostage hold and the tranquilliser then MGS3 adding the camo and the eating food for survival and fixing wounds and then MGS4 added the octo-camo effectively removing the somewhat cumbersome camo system from 3 but still being useful. The whole menu for buying weapons is a little weird for me. Where is he getting these weapons from and where are the weapons going when he picks them up? Just seemed odd to me. I much preferred the old system from MGS1 where you could only get ammo from ammo store rooms and you couldn't get new weapons from the genome soldiers because they were ID tagged. Seemed more realistic and much more plausible. MGS4 went a little too OTT with this, and the smoking monkey and just general quirkiness of the title grated on me a little. It wasn't as enjoyable as the first 3 were, but it's still a damn good game. Especially with the slim pickings on the PS3.
I haven't played MGS4, so I couldn't tell you one way or the other, but MGS and MGS2 weren't that difficult. MGS3 was tougher, due to lack of radar and having to eat.
