Freedom Planet takes a lot from other games, the boss design is very reminiscent of Contra Hard Corps, for example.Gunstar Green wrote:It also takes from PlayStation era Mega Man X, specifically Carol's play style.

Well, the only other two of those I played were Escape Goat 2 and Banner Saga. Not much of Banner Saga, at that. But EG2 was wonderful. I remember getting the first game in an Indie Royale bundle, not expecting a lot, and after I finished, I was itching for the sequel.

Banner Saga actually took like 3 or 4 failed starts before I got totally hooked on it. Beautiful game. My wife got me the soundtrack CD for Christmas actually. I'm looking forward to the sequel now.Sarge wrote:Well, the only other two of those I played were Escape Goat 2 and Banner Saga. Not much of Banner Saga, at that. But EG2 was wonderful. Escape Goat 2 is amazing. A year later I still fire it up randomly and try to finish up one more room for towards the 100%. This says a lot as I am generally very anti-completionist.

I've come to terms with the idea that there's nothing wrong with that as long as I'm having fun.Exhuminator wrote:Nostalgia is a helluva drug.

Invoking nostalgia is okay as a knowing wink to the past (Freedom Planet), but if it is used as a substitute for innovation I`m not so cool with it (Return to Dreamland).Gunstar Green wrote:I've come to terms with the idea that there's nothing wrong with that as long as I'm having fun.Exhuminator wrote:Nostalgia is a helluva drug.

[Speaking of] Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the pinnacle of the entire series IMO. It's the most creative and feature-filled, at the very least. They really paid attention to details with that game, eg. the in-game events like Angel Island catching on fire and the boss entrances, shield powerups, a different awesome gimmick for each level; all that stuff. The best special stages and music too. The introduction of Knuckles and his play-style. Etc.
Sonic 1 & 2 are good as well, but not AS good.

Yeah I'm surprised to hear some people don't like 3 and Knuckles, only because let's be real here: The first four games are extremely similar stylistically. I don't see any dispute there. If you like 1 & 2 I don't see the next two games as anything less than passable and worth a playthrough. They're all about the same to me give or take, other than maybe S&K because as a kid that was when I was growing tired of the same gameplay and didn't even finish it.dogman91 wrote:[Speaking of] Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the pinnacle of the entire series IMO. In general I think they had it right with the 3D Sonic or Shadow levels in SA and SA2. That's all anyone ever wanted from Sonic when the next generation came along. Instead they muddied the waters with other levels and gameplay that no one cared about and for good reason. The straight up levels were great, and in some ways more memorable than anything Sonic did on the Genesis. As someone else said though, they continue to try too hard and get fancy when I think all people want is those levels from the DC games.

Those 3D levels running stages have to be absolutely massive though, they must take ages to build and render. I'm pretty sure the reason the other playstyles are in there is to pad the game out with something that can be created with less resources, as a game of 10 of those running stages would be incredibly short by modern standards and still take a damn long time and a lot of money to develop.Snatch1414 wrote:dogman91 wrote: In general I think they had it right with the 3D Sonic or Shadow levels in SA and SA2.
