And to you youngsters, I don't mean like "that One Direction concert is really selling out fast" or "Gamestop is sold out of Amiibos"...I mean like "noise was really into Dreamcast games but then he sold out" or "Minecraft used to be a cool little indie thing but then Notch started putting creepers on t-shirts and totally sold out."

I don't know, I've lived in both states and I've seen more confederate flags in Pennsylvania.MrPopo wrote:Considering the number of Confederate flags around that doesn't surprise me.Forlorn Drifter wrote:Maybe in Pennsylvania... Re: Random Thoughts Thread
"Selling out" means "I don't like what they're doing" since... I dunno, at least 15 years or so now.
For example: Metallica supposedly "sold out" when they made Load, Reload, etc. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but "selling out" is supposed to be about sacrificing your artistic vision to make more money, yes? Why then would you consider what Metallica did "selling out"? They went from being one of, if not the undisputed masters of their genre into an entirely new sound which they knew would probably alienate a large portion of their listening audience (because human beings like predictability) and thus make them less money.
It was kinda the opposite of selling out, and yet that's what they were accused of.
Kids these days *shakes head, then cane*

Metallica, for those who buy into the idea, are considered "sell outs" because they went from a thrash sound to a more mainstream, somewhat easier on the ears, and easier to sell. They made more money after "selling out". Some problems came later on, but the Black Album, while still in the thrash vein was softer and closer to traditional metal or hard rock than pure thrash, and everything after continued in that direction, in the eyes of many, thus "selling out".KalessinDB wrote:"Selling out" means "I don't like what they're doing" since... I'm not sure I agree with the sentiment that they sold out, but the reason people claim so seems pretty clear to me.

See I never heard those arguments at Black Album. I could see that, sort of, if you went back that far. I only heard them pop up at Load, which was an entirely new artistic direction for them.

Ah, "Posers" and "sellouts". Two main words of the jaded high school youth vocabulary.
I was called "prep" and "pretty boy" a lot in high school (no, really I did) in a jokingly manner, and mostly from my friends of the African American persuasion. So when one day I wore a NIN t-shirt, vengeance from "the oucast" crowd centered on me and how much of a "Poser" I was. I had all the NIN cd's, and I mean all of them including singles and b-sides, went to their concerts, but was a "Poser" because I guess I wasn't hanging out with them.
Also had a friend with affluent parents who almost got his ass handed to him for wearing a Wu-Tang shirt.
Kids are silly.
