Hey now, this is the unpopular opinions thread after all. They're in exactly the right place.
I never really played much of the original Tomb Raider (or really, any followup), so I can't weigh in.

Gunning for a licensed NES NTSC-U set, follow the madness and poverty here!
Cheat sheet of my collection, always looking to increase it. 405/677 licensed games, 46/"95" unlicensed

I hate the Turrican series. The fact that there's no invincibility window, stun, or displacement when you take damage, the utter nonsense levels that feel more like "we have to put as many platforms and crap in this space as possible" than "how can we create a compelling experience for the player", blah... The only thing I like is the tunes.Gunstar Green wrote:But.. but Turrican...Exhuminator wrote:It's okay Factor 5's dead so all is right in the world.Ack wrote:And you hate the second Rogue Squadron!
The Euro design ethic that governs Turrican and many computer shooter titles just frustrates the crap out of me. Not because they are different, but because they suck.

I actually completely share your sentiment on Euro platformers.marurun wrote:I hate the Turrican series. Try Mega Turrican or Super Turrican 2. They follow more Japanese design cues (knock back, damage invincibility, straight forward levels) and are incidentally my favorites by a long shot.
They're also the ones Factor 5 made themselves instead of games remade from Manfred Trenz's work.

Many of the "classic" European games are hard as balls for the wrong reasons.
Ever try to finish Shadow of the Beast?
Then again you have stuff like Lemmings, which is beyond brilliant.

Going back to tomb raider, the originals have aged poorly. I only played 2, 3 and 4 (none to completition though) so maybe in the first one the platforming and puzzles are more designed around the limitations of the movement. Hold on this isn't unpopular at all.
If sonic generations is the best sonic game in years then i feel sorry for the whole series. It's good but not AMAZING/GREAT/OMG SO GUD.

I'm sure I'd hate the camera and controls today, but at the time the original Tomb Raider was great IMO. The feeling you got when you first entered a large room and the camera panned around, that was totally new.

Good is all you can really ask for out of Sonic. I'm tired of the expectation that it should still be amazing or on par with Mario (though this is maybe partially Sega's fault for continuing to push it so hard). It lost that battle many years ago.Damm64 wrote:If sonic generations is the best sonic game in years then i feel sorry for the whole series. It's good but not AMAZING/GREAT/OMG SO GUD.
I really think Sega could grind out something better if they would take an idea and stick to it for a sequel or two in order to refine and polish the gameplay instead of re-inventing the wheel every time.
I'm interested in seeing where they move after Boom since it was an unmitigated disaster.

Freedom Planet is where it's at. I'm going to be like some sort of ambassador or something for this game, kinda like Shovel Knight. I mean, I thought the Genesis Sonic games were fun, but they've never really been my cup-o'-tea. FP, however, is hitting all the right notes. It's got a nice balance between speed and exploration / puzzles, and I love that. And you'll see tons of callbacks to other great Genesis games through it all, even though, really, it feels like a long-lost Saturn game.

I really didn't get the love for Freedom Planet. I was really excited to give it a go. Felt let down quickly. It's weird. I loved Shovel Knight for what it's worth. And I love 16-bit Sonic Games. FP just didn't do anything for me, and I lost interest really quickly.
