I got this game the other day; currently in the middle of episode 2.
First impressions are good. Rev 2 actually has the "horror-vibe" that people erroneously claimed the first title possessed. The environments have that Silent Hill, everything-is-run-down and covered in blood look.
Combat is pretty solid and thankfully scanning for items has been streamlined somewhat. If you see an item sparkle you shine the flashlight on it to fully reveal it so you can pick it up. It's still a tad obnoxious and really seems unnecessary because you already know where the item is but at least you don't have to go into first person mode and scan each room like the first game.
My only major issue is that the game feels like it was made solely for co-op play. If you're playing solo like me you'll constantly be switching back and forth between characters due to different abilities or specific items that characters use. Playing solo feels like it is dragging down the experience whereas playing with a friend the game would be going by a little faster with faster puzzle solving and effective coordination during combat.
I hope this game turns out to be as scary, creepy and dark as Resident Evil 2 was back in the day, and I also hope it takes place entirely at night and have you alone during the majority of the gameplay.
9 pages, and yet only 1 post from someone who has played the game since release. Interesting...
I played 40 mins of episode 1 the other night. It felt... boring. I'll concede that the surroundings were pretty Silent Hill-y (meant as a compliment), but I don't know. It felt like all I've done is walk down a hallway, shoot zombies, walk down a hallway, find a key, walk down a hallway, shoot zombies, walk down a hallway, shine flashlight on crowbar, walk down a hallway...
So I guess I'm wondering - does it get better? At least more interesting?
I should say that I'm a big fan of both RE1 and RE4; meaning I do really love both the 'old' and 'new' styles of RE, when done well. And I should say that even "bad" RE games can be truly interesting to me for trying different things.
I feel like I want to like this game. Or at least I feel like it's possible I could. The reviews were generally positive (for a latter day RE) and it feels like both the episodic nature and the "single-player co-op" thing could both be interesting additions.
I haven't had a chance to play anything recently and have only beaten up to Ep. 2. but I like it. I think the Barry half of the episodes are more fun. I don't like Moira.
From what I've played Rev 2 isn't really a run-n-gun like RE 3 through 6. For the most part it feels like a stealth/action game to me. Although the Claire segments are more action-y.
I finished the game earlier this year and posted about it in games beaten. I never posted here because I remembered it being mostly complaining before the game was out. Maybe I'm remembering wrong though, I didn't go back through the thread again.
Anyway, I loved the game. The first chapter is the slowest though, things pick up as you move along with some tougher fights, freaky areas and a couple of neat bosses. There's also a couple of funny bits calling back to the original RE.
Obviously your mileage will vary, but I had a great time with it, and I found it to be much better than the first Revelations. I think you should keep at it.
