Random Gaming Thoughts
Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
OnLive was an interesting concept, reminded me of GameTap. I used to love it on GT, then they got bought out and did away with the standalone player and made everything crappy, and the customer service took a turn for the worst, then they lost the deals with the publishers, and like OnLive just a former version of itself.

One cool thing about OnLive now is that you can play your Steam games you already own. This requires a monthly fee of $7.95. This means, if you're willing to pay the monthly fee, you can still enjoy Steam pricing, which is much better than OnLive's pricing. It also opens you up to a wider library of games than OnLive offers.isiolia wrote:Lots of stuff - from a consumer standpoint, they're still here, but it's technically a new company. OnLive proved that streaming a high end video game at 720p is possible. That is still an impressive accomplishment to me. Unfortunately, it also proved that it's not very cost effective. You essentially need a dedicated PC for every user who is concurrently using the service. This means you need to have enough machines to handle a high traffic day. Also, you have to handle users that don't buy many games. You're buying fancy computers for your customers who don't have enough money to buy them for themselves, and since that is your primary demographic, they don't buy many of the games on the service because they usually charge full retail price to make up for the expense of the machines that run the games.
It's possible that there is some brilliant business model that would work for the service, and as I mentioned, they have come up with a few interesting ideas like the CloudLift service that lets you play your Steam games, but they still have to invest money to keep their machines at the cutting edge as hardware and graphics continue to improve. Will their machines be able to play the next wave of games like Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077? Since my machine won't be able to handle those games, perhaps I will use OnLive as a stop gap before I buy a new PC, but I'm likely to just keep playing games my PC can handle until I get a new PC. And this decision process is exactly the kind of problem OnLive has to contend with. It's amazing cloud technology that just has a hard time living in the real world. If you're a fan of puns, you could say that OnLive has its head in the clouds more than it has its feet on the ground.

Are you asking because you've tried and are having trouble? Or because you're thinking of going to Win8 and are concerned it won't work?Soldier Blue wrote:Has anyone here been able to use the Dolphin emulator with windows 8?
I have a Surface that I could try it out on to see if it will work for you if you need.

It works fine on windows 8. Just make sure your drivers and plugins are up to date and you have the write version for your os (x86 or x64).
