EDIT: official transcript of the press conference - http://www.nintendo.co.jp/corporate/rel ... index.html
Some people see this as a long overdue move and an obvious way to improve Nintendo's bottom line!
Some see it as the ultimate blasphemy!
What are your thoughts?
I for one welcome the move. I can't wait to start playing Nintendo games on the go...something I rarely do now because I hate carrying around some kind of dedicated gaming device in addition to my phone, keys, wallet, etc.
Nintendo IPs come to smartphones...

The other nugget in this article is at the bottom:Nintendo and DeNA expect to develop a new core system compatible with a variety of devices including PCs, smartphones and tablets as well as Nintendo's dedicated video game systems, and are to jointly develop a membership service utilizing this system, with a launch targeted for the fall of 2015
I can't picture Nintendo games popping up on Steam or anything before the year's out, but that would be amazing.
They've been fairly clear that these would be exclusively new games designed for Smartphone. Expect to see more games like Pokémon Shuffle or the already-on-smartphone Pokedex 3D and less games like F-Zero or y'know, an actual Pokémon game.
They've also said they won't be porting existing games or games made for 3DS or Wii U over.
I'm interested to see how the move works out. It might work out for Nintendo, but I'm not keen on the idea of their console business suffering for mobile content. It seems like the mobile developer they've partnered with is going to be in charge of that stuff though, so hopefully that won't happen.
There was also a codename drop for some type of dedicated Nintendo console - 'NX'. I wonder if this is the follow up to the 3DS or something new. I'm somewhat doubtful it's a Wii U successor, but we'll see I guess!
As for your PC comment, I think you might be confused there. They're saying there's a new membership service (like Club Nintendo) compatible with PC. There was no real suggestion anywhere of actual games being made for PC.

that's what happens when i read/post before coffee!

About time, really. They've been missing a market that probably wasn't going to buy their hardware anyway. Bring me my f2p Animal Crossing, DeNA!

Nintendo IP on mobile. You could see this as a slippery slope move, but ultimately it's something that's inevitable for Nintendo to accept the reality of.
During the Wii / DS era I became confident in Nintendo again and was overall quite happy with their output. In the past few years though, I've been so disappointed with Nintendo since their Wii U / 3DS era, that I feel nothing about this mobile push. I somewhat enjoy my 3DS and games, but there is so much wasted potential with the device and the library it could have, that I've developed a bit of a grudge towards Nintendo lately. As for the Wii U, I still have not bought one because there's not even five game I consider killer apps for it yet.
Anyway, maybe they will do a better job with mobile IP. Hope so.

Re: Nintendo IPs come to smartphones...
Do people really trust Nintendo to do a good job with the collaboration?
As someone who rather enjoys Nintendo games, I'm nervous as hell about how this goes down. Nintendo have put out some fantastic software collaborations before but their track record for hardware isn't nearly as strong. It's not clear to me exactly what the deal is going to be though... and until more details come out it's too early to judge or build any kind of expectations.
Definitely an interesting move though, and clearly an exciting opportunity for gamers if things go well.

Ehh I don't really care either way. I never use my phone for gaming and rarely ever 'game on the go'. If it makes them more profitable then it will be a smart move.

I only care about one thing: Good games. And Nintendo releasing games to smartphones doesn't seem like a move that promotes good games.

I wondered why todays high went from around 75 down to 50. Hell froze over because of Nintendo.
I'm curious to see what they do especially considering the one they partnered up with. I have no issue with it as long as they keep development starkly different between tap stuff and real games on a dedicated system. Once the lines blur you have a problem. I want to see nice things, but I don't want to see things so nice they could have been on the 3DS because then they're screwing themselves and anyone who owns their devices because it will drive sales towards the micro attention span IAP quick play and drop for another dungeon of tablet gaming.
