Why does it have such a loud cd drive? I thought it was going to break when I first heard itbacardipr05 wrote:Ever try and mute the TV and "quietly"play the Dreamcast when someone is sleeping in the same room. As the DC starts its charming drive reading sounds..Screech, Screech, grind, sheek, sheek..

Its internal gears are made out of pseudo-squeaky hamster wheels. You're bound to hear them.

I think a lot of non DC owners think the same. Im not sure why they are loud. Sega did want to reduce the cost of building it to a minimum perhaps this is why. The Saturn is " Stealth Mode" quiet but the DC is a different beast. This particular one seems ( cant be sure) to have been getting a little louder lately. I debated opening it up and lubing the drive but honestly dont think it will make much if any difference. Certain games get her crunching, grinding and sheeking more than other games as Exed pointed out.

The weird thing is, different Dreamcast's seem to have different levels of noisiness. I'm on my fourth Dreamcast now (I take care of my consoles, I promise. I had some weird power issue in the flat I was living in a couple of years back that was blowing all consoles) and each Dreamcast has sounded ever so slightly different. I think my first Dreamcast was the loudest. I remember when I bought it back in the year 2000 (wow, I feel old). I thought the noise was bad and there was something wrong with the console. I nearly took it back to the shop, but someone told me it was normal.
BTW, I have done a couple of Dreamcast related posts on my blog recently, so, yeah, shameless self-promotion sorry

You are right some of them do sound a little different. I have 4 DC ( including my launch unit which is on her last breath). I can tell my launch DC apart since my nephew colored the power button black. I do believe the one im currently using was one of the ones out of the 4 that was quietest. I dont have them marked or anything so i could of rotated the unit out and forgot.
PS..Nice read Reprise...I always wondered why they didnt bring Guilty Gear over. I actually didnt find out about that game until one day i was searching the Clearance section of my Circuit City and bought it for Xbox.

Thanks. I'm working on part 2 as I speak, but man it's take me so long to write these days haha. Yeah, Guilty Gear is awesome. I'm not sure why they didn't release it outside of Japan, because it's easily one of the best 2D fighters on the system.bacardipr05 wrote:PS..Nice read Reprise...I always wondered why they didnt bring Guilty Gear over. GGX would've come out here near the end of the systems retail life out here so... plus Sammy USA was already working on the US PS2 port by then.
DC in Japan was supposed to get a port of GGX Plus which was based on the 1.5 ASW arcade update but it never saw the light of day outside of a JPN exclusive PS2 port. Shame
