Retro games, (especially shooters and fighters) demand much devotion and dedication to get the most out of them and attain a certain level of ability. These are attributes that can get you very far in almost any walk of life.
As all the members of this forum have an interest in old school gaming in one way or another and must have some degree of skill, i was wandering whether any of you guys have used your qualities and became a champion at anything.
Could be regional, national, international. It can be gaming or non-gaming related.
Dont be modest, you have bragging rights!!!

I don't actually have any skill. I play old games anyway though. Usually on easy mode lol.
Although I can beat the first level in Sonic 2 in 21 seconds or something. . .

I don't know if there is some sort of championship title for it, but I consider myself pretty boss for getting through Metal Slug 2 without ever being hit at the local Pizza Hut (well, maybe I got hit while in a Metal Slug, but I never lost a life is what I mean).
Of course, this required an insane amount of practice. Still, I wanted to have my initials on the scoreboard for all to see. The best way to rack up points is to rescue hostages, and you loss all your hostages if you die. The obvious choice, then, is to never die.
Furthest I can get on Metal Slug 3 without dying is about Level 3 or 4.

Just among friends. I don't have any interest is "serious" competitions. I think all the "serious" players bitching about smash brothers all the time put me off to that entire scene.

Re: Any champions on here ?????
When Age of Empires III was released, Microsoft attempted a tournament with various university gaming clubs, to try to find a best-in-the-nation kind of deal. They held two tournaments for score at my university, and I was the second champion(a buddy of mine was first). Won $100 off Microsoft. National tournaments never happened through.
Microsoft later came back when Halo 2 was released on PC, and I won that tournament too. That game sucked though, so I'm not really proud of that one. Only won a free copy of Windows Vista.

I've been gaming for 20+ years, but was never in it for a challenge. It's a relaxing hobby for me, so I usually tweak settings to easier levels on retro or more hardcore games like SHMUPs.

I managed to pull off the requirements to fight Sheng Long in SF2... And then realize game over was all that came from it. But still, it was hard.
(FC, AVFC, NES, SFC x2, SNES, N64, GC x2, Wii x2)*(G&W x7, GB, GBpocket, GBASP, DS-L x2)
(GEN, SS x3, DC x3)*(PCE-Duo)*(Xbox:500GB)*(NGCDZ, NGPC)*(PS1, PStwo, PS3:160GB, PSP.3K)

I've done that on Sonic 3. In fact I remember when I sat down to do it, I said, I'm gonna get all the emeralds and beat this game without dying. I turned into supersonic at the end of launch base. . . and then ran out of rings exactly as the last boss started (the one I hadn't ever beat without getting hit a couple times) But I managed to figure him out. That was awesome. . .
