Even today I have yet to see a shooter with destructible environments to the extent that Red Faction featured, over 10 years ago on PS2.

Worked well in an FPS 20 years ago...

It turns out having environments as destructible as that are a major challenge from a level design perspective. One of the things I noticed as I made my way through the game was the large number of indestructible surfaces that existed and it got worse the deeper I got into the game. Making the destruction integral means that you either have to toss neigh infinite explosives at the player so they don't screw themselves like Mega Man against the turrets in the second game and you have to be very careful about keeping the player from getting lost as they tunnel around. The other option is to make it utterly superficial which takes away the player wanting to even screw around with the explosives because it doesn't matter.

One might say that the destructible environments feature was ground breaking.

Speaking of evil mining corporations, I've picked up Descent to play alongside my Dungeon Keeper run. I'm using a joystick and using the throttle for forward/back so I'm finding I'm not as nimble as I could be, but I like the general feeling of using a joystick for this kind of game. I was surprised to find I was able to get up to Laser Level 4 by the third mission. And I think I can get the Quad on mission 5, which means I'll be set for primary weapons for the rest of the game.

The Vulcan robots from Descent can die in a fire.

Started up S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadows of Chernobyl and am enjoying it a lot. Definitely a more meticulous and slower paced game. I haven't gotten far, but I did make one crucial mistake. I took all the quests I could in one big load and then realized there is a time limit on them. I hope I can finish them in time, but we will see!

Put the game difficulty on Veteran and have found it to be challenging but not impossible.

Good luck, Bogus. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is one of the best FPS series of the 2000s. I absolutely love those games. Have you made it under the bridge and beyond the entrance to the Zone yet?

Oh no. I am still taking it nice and slow. put about 2 hours into it and made it over the train tracks. Got myself an assault rifle and things have gotten infinitely easier because of it.

Did you clear out the Russian Army, or are you paying or sneaking through? Once you have a decent rifle, it is usually worth wasting those guys so you never have to pay again. They mainly drop AK-74us if I recall correctly.
