I hate the Game Club or whatever.

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Clubs come and go. I remember in college Ack and I were in the computer gaming club, and a group tried to start a Halo club - using the Greek letters to spell out Halo. They did not even get through one meeting. Another group started to try and advertise lan parties every Saturday night, they lasted three meetings. We on the other hand have lasted since early 98 - damn the club is 11 years old now.

While I am not completely trying to gloat, I mean who would think a college in Alabama would have a computer gaming group? But when I recently returned to the club I realized that it became much like you described - bad internet sayings and flash videos included. But my thoughts of them dropped low when I went to the semester lan party, when someone asked if Alice was a good game, and another asked why I liked Saturn games...

I am tempted to not go back, but it is two of the three times I see Ack every year...

Games clubs are pretty much 'FPS-Flavour of the month clubs' these days. If you don't like the choice of games and prefer something more retrofied. Make your own retro games club. It's that simple. Either that or follow the advice of another person in this thread, and bring your own setup. If you have some laptops or access to some PCs you could get Snes9x running and play Bomberman over LAN (I used to do that at college back in the day. It was the mutts). Rather than complaining about the lack of retro games you should lead by example and show them what they are missing.

You left out a couple of bits, chief. First, it's not just old, it's actually the OLDEST official university gaming club of its kind. At least, I've never heard of one older.

I would like to take a moment here and discuss the FPS genre because I'm seeing a little bit of hate for it in this thread. Most of my greatest multiplayer experiences in that club were while playing first person shooters. Age usually wasn't a factor in our decision to play one however, as just two years ago, we would still play Battlefield, Call of Duty, and Aliens Vs. Predator: Gold. Half-Life Deathmatch and Team Fortress Classic were also popular. The secret to having fun in a gaming club in these games? Either A) start using teamwork, or B) goof the fuck off.

A) is fun, because then you'll start making friends, and you'll see your effectiveness in the game go up. You can also try talking to club members about what they play outside of the club, and if they play online in groups...great way to get in some practice working with them. The group I ran with in Battlefield 2142 was made up of guys from my local gaming club, and we would regularly dominate servers when we were on the same team(to the point we once found our clan being used as proof people were hacking in the game...nobody thought we could be that good).

B) is fun because...well, if you've ever blown up a helicopter in mid-air with a gasoline-tanker truck, driven a dune buggy laden with C4 into a fully loaded APC, or beat somebody down with a pair of binoculars...yeah(...I've watched Fastbilly do all of these things...Hell, I was IN the gas truck). Try out the game, and then do something stupid and completely unexpected. Either they'll kick you out of the club for being an idiot(which means they weren't worth playing with anyway), or they'll get a kick out of it and you'll start making friends.

Once you've made friends, you can start seeing about changing some of the games they play. In the meantime, enjoy the education that you might get in some games you never thought you'd try, and get a few laughs out of it as well.

Plus, it's likely that they don't only play FPS when they're at home. Some of the best folks I've played MMORPGs with were from Gamers.

Actually i had a part in forming a retro game club back in highschool. Mind you all we had to begin with was a nes and a tv that was almost as old as the nes but people that saw us playing these games usually stuck around. And what started as a way to slack off between classes actually became a club of sorts.

So yeah retro club is a good idea it's a cheap setup :D

My school has a big sci-fi/fantasy club that encompasses all things nerdy. They have separate groups for films, comics, books, and gaming. It's actually really big. The people are cool, but they're mostly PC gamers :( . I'm going to pursue getting more console and retro gaming events going.

And this is why you should never play games with others. Ever.

I am quite tolerant of the Game Club.

So the second chance came. I went to the game club a little early. they were all playing I think Counter-Strike and Unreal Tournament 2004 but they were nice enough to show me how to play. After learning the ropes I got bored after about 30 minutes and wanted to do something else.
Out of the blue they decide to play D&D, I talked to one of the guys who was playing Tetris Attack with us last time (who also happens to be on the newspaper staff with me), well he is really into the retro games.
I was in, it was time to pull out the big guns. We talk about all our favorite old games, make some suggestions and talk Street Fighter for a while. We play some games on homebrew and I introduced him to some games he has never even played. I showed him the greatness of Recca, the bliss of Gunstar Heroes, and bust some heads in SoR2. We got quite a few SF2 matches in. Overall I had a great time.

We were talking about doing something new for the club next week. He suggested focusing on one game per week or doing a mini tournament each week. I was thinking the same thing! He told me under his breath "I was getting really fucking tired of Unreal every week". And so, just like that, I had helped to change the Game Club into something better.

So next week we were thinking of firing up some Street Fighter 2 or doing something with Bomberman or maybe some shmups, score attack or survival or something along those lines.
All that is left now is if it will be popular, or will they be too set in their ways to try something different.
