The survival games I would recommend would be DayZ, for it's dynamic on-line environment that can create the most frustrating, yet magical moments in any game. Great to play alone, or with friends, the game takes time and effort to survive, but it is all worth it to fulfill whatever roll you see yourself in a apocalyptic world. Are you the lone survivor who spends their time out in the wilderness hunting and gathering? A collector of books? A man searching for other survivors to rebuild? Or just a man who wants to watch the world burn even more? This is a place for you.

If you want a solo-only experience, I would recommend, The Forest. You play a survivor of a crashed airplane and your son was taken by the natives. You must avoid them while building up your base and gathering resources. What makes it great is the natives themselves. You can set up traps for them, make giant imposing totems comprised of their body parts, or watch them freak out as someone they love is murdered by you. You see them in the trees and patrolling the forest, being curious of your existence and testing the boundaries of what they can get away with around you before making their big moves. It is a really really interesting game.
