One of the weird social cues that I never got until recently was this: If someone offers you a drink or food at their house. Accept it. If it is alcohol and you don't drink. Ask for water or pop. Curse my social awkwardness!

In the US, it's ok to turn down an offer, though it really depends on the cultural background of the person who is offering. But when you start getting into other regions of the world, it can be considered a huge insult to refuse food offered by the host.

I had a friend from Swaziland in grad school who would offer me fruit any time I visited her. She yelled at me the first time I said no!

I sometimes have to ask for an alternative to alcohol which can get kind of awkward. Just happened the other night in fact. "Uhhhh..... do you have any soda?"

Yeah that always starts things off on the wrong foot. I've noticed most people respond with, "uhhhh...you don't drink? Why not?"

Sigh.

I have family who knows I have been off alcohol for over a year, almost two now, due to it becoming a problem. They still offer me drinks every time I go to their house. I turn them down and they place the drink in front of me anyway, I'm sure they are offended when I leave it untouched, but what the hell does it take?

They have a drinking problem, which I am sure doesn't help...but I don't go over there getting all preachy and telling them how to live. I don't understand the need to force liquor on someone.

I probably do come off as an ass sometimes though, because recent dietary restrictions have limited those options as well. It seems I am turning down nearly everything that is offered to me. The thing is, all these people know the reasons why.

I was offered a great price on a sodastream device and am very tempted. I used one in the Soda Club days and was very disappointed, but after using one on New Years Eve it seems like they fixed most of the kinks with the system. The fact that Kitchenaid just released there own version that looks like a 1950s soda fountain makes me even more interested. I am aware of how much of a racket the co2 is, but I can get a 20lb tank from a local homebrew company (all food grade and used for making beer) and upgrade the device to take that. I dont drink that much soda, despite my love for it, but to make fresh seltzer water it might pay for itself.

Having dietary restrictions my entire life, I can relate.

People can be ... weird/self conscious/self loathing/spiteful/immature ... I've known people whom have life threatening allergies and people are upset at them because they didn't eat something they were offered that had tree nuts, or something, in it.

Carbonating everything is awesome. One of the best drinks I have ever had was carbonated Apple Juice. Sooooo good!
