Hey I'm glad that you finally broke free from the rough start that is Grandia. It continues to improve though and you start to really bond with the characters. It has a great episodic feel, which I love, that seems very prevalent in the 32-bit era. Keep it up!noiseredux wrote:just finished up Dom Ruins. Whoever nominated this game, good call. I'm enjoying it almost as much as Grandia II now, and starting to think that Grandia in general is one of my favorite RPG series.

Re: Together Retro: Grandia
Quick question: If Sue heals outside of battle does she still get xp?
Re: Together Retro: Grandia
Yep! Heal from the menu before using a save-point!
I finished up stuff at Luc Village and am making my way towards The End of the World. I also ordered a copy of Grandia II; I want to play that at some point after this!

I've heard good stuff about both Grandia and Grandia II, but no-one ever talks about Grandia III. Was it that bad?
Re: Together Retro: Grandia
Hey Racketboy site members!
This is my first time to do a together retro on this site. So when I seen that it was going to be Grandia, I knew that now was the right time to finally play and finish it. I have only played Grandia 2 and that was my first introduction of the series with the Dreamcast version (the best version Imo). I have had the game for a while now but every time i tried to start it I would some how get distracted and not play it. So this time I am going to finish it, and to be honest; I don't know why it took me so long to start it because this game is fantastic so far.
I just made it through the Dom ruins and now I am off to find the medicine for those who know. I am close to 11 hours in and I am in love with the game. The game play is great, music is amazing, graphics are (for the time) are good, the characters so far have great charm, and the whole story has me really engaged.
The one that that I could take it or leave it is the voice acting. It's not so hot and I would really just rather have text only but i can leave with it. I figured with the quality voice acting Grandia 2 had, 1 would be no different but I guess that's not the case.
All in all it is enjoyable and I am hoping to finish it this month. The one thing that i realized by playing this game; is that now a days you don't have these types of games like Grandia. If you do it is too far and in between, but it at the same time it really makes you appreciate the experience more.

Re: Together Retro: Grandia
Hey welcome to Together Retro! It is great to have you on board, especially with such a fantastic game to start with! I agree the voice acting is sub par, but there are delightfully charming moments, especially with Sue's spellcasting. I mentioned earlier, her level 2 earth spell has her shouting, "EARTHQUAKES ARE SCARY!" that cracks me up every time.Vant3c wrote:Hey Racketboy site members!

I agree that this style of RPG has long been set to the wayside in favor of a more direct and linear level of interactivity, but there are still some out there that put a lot of attention to detail. I wish more games spent time allowing you to observe and interact with the environment like they did in the 32-bit era, but sadly, it is what it is.
I always felt that if a game took the time to meticulously craft a game with everything have a purpose and being intentional, then there is longevity in replay as you pick up those tiny details. I'm looking at you Shenmue!!!!

Re: Together Retro: Grandia
I agree with you on the interactivity part of the game. I love how in both Grandia 1 & 2 you would run into a table or past a broom, and stuff would fall over. It made the world and place feel more lived in and not just a static back drop to the game.
I agree with you on some Shenmue man. Love the game's, story, characters, awkward voice acting and overall setting. We will never get a third one and if we did I would be utterly shocked lol. But back to Grandia; the interactivity and the exploration is something that I really do enjoy about this game. Some times the the 3d view in the game can be a little difficult but its not so bad.
I am sure that there are other games out there that are like this but in todays game market its more direct and liner like you said. I would love for another Grandia game to come out with today's tech and innovations but keep it in the same style to a point. I would love to see that game but I don't think it would ever happen.

Sue's "thinking" pose is insanely cute.

I'm in the volcano now. Did not see that coming at all!

Re: Together Retro: Grandia
Yeah that is really funny to see her in that pose but not as funny as some of the dialogue when they meet Liete, when she gets frightened in game they sure give her some hilarious dialogue. Which I'm getting ready to leave Parm and get the pass(yes I'm still working on Lunar just going to be a bit before I finish it since i have to rehook up everything since I was trying to make room for my new mattress...)BoneSnapDeez wrote:Sue's "thinking" pose is insanely cute.

Re: Together Retro: Grandia
First off, Welcome aboard Vant3c!
So I have put in 11 hours and am still at the beginning of the Dom Ruins. I am not struggling, I am just playing and watching sports - putting the controller down when big plays happen. I have been at the Ruins for about 30 min leveling up Sue's water magic... should I keep doing this or is it a waste of time in the big picture?
