Re: Hidden Gems of the DOS/Windows PCs
I don't know if it's quite obscure enough to be considered a hidden gem, but SYSTEM SHOCK was and is awesome - it laid the groundwork for intelligent FPS games such as it's sequel SS2, deus ex, bioshock & more through using storytelling elements, and the sound files on the CD edition which i played made it fantastically immersive and atmospheric. The inventory and boost sytem was way more advanced than other FPS's of it's day, I understand this was carried over from the Ultima series of dungeon crawling RPG's? It had a non linear design, and also spawned one of the greatest videogame baddies of all time. Anyway, it was totally less well known than doom, wolf 3d, ROTT, hexen, dark forces, unreal et al. and gets my vote.

I'd suggest Cyber Dogs, I thin it also went by C-Dogs. It was pretty good on it's own, but on two player it was awesome.

Any of the MUD (Multi-User Dungeon) text-based games.
Zork is an excellent example.
More modern, but still obscure, are games like Avalon.

Haha, oh man, Harvester is certainly not a gem in any way at all.

Did anyone mention Abuse? You can get it freely on-line nowdays. It was pretty revolutionary at the time. It was an action platformer/shooter in which you move with the keyboard but you aim with the mouse.

Older. Not wiser.
