Because I'd like to think we as a species are more evolved than that. There's no reason not to treat everyone you meet with at least a modicum of respect and dignity. Once you've met someone, it's possible that they prove themselves to not be deserving of it, but any random Joe Schmoe on the street deserves some common decency until proven otherwise.

At least, that's my take on it.

Agreed, and far too many people see those in customer service or in service jobs as those to be shat upon by default - I know, I worked my fair share of them for many years in everything from food service to retail. There is no sacred job that is immune to assholes working in them, of course, but generally the public tends to assume the worst about anyone who is punching a cash register, speaking to them on the phone, stocking a shelf, handling food in a chain restaurant, etc. I think it is related to the general disdain we have for "poor people" in this country (many of these are minimum-wage jobs), and too many people get off on making themselves feel better at the expense of others that they deem inferior. :(

In general I try to be nice and pleasant to folks in call centers. I make jokes, I ask them about their day, anything that can make them have a better day overall.

I have chewed a few out before, but only when something was repeatedly not getting resolved. If I'm told something is done and then you haven't done it, I start getting annoyed.

Absolutely. I find that people deserve some level of friendliness and helpfulness. If you go out of your way to be nice and happy, 90% of the people react in kind and are actually refreshed to see such behavior. Happiness breeds happiness and my current experience in retail has proven that.

Sure you get a small fraction of people who are neurotic or spite-filled, but those are so few and far between. People in general can be very selfish, but that is a part of human nature. We don't spend every second of every day considering others around us and when in a store environment, people are focusing on themselves on what they need to buy.

Only time when things get really weird is during the Christmas season when you see people break. I have watched a man attack a manager over wanting a $50 item for $5 because it was in the near vicinity of a sales tag. I have watched husbands and wives scream at each other over whether to get their kid Skylanders or Disney Infinity.

You would think that Christmas would bring the best out of people, but it usually brings out the worst. People are strange, but that is what makes them so special and interesting.

I am always nice, even when a person gets angry, because almost every time a person actually does get angry, it is about something far beyond the realm of my control and I happen to be the target. Ahhhh well!

I think the last time I got a little snippy on the phone was with T-Mobile. I was inquiring about a new phone I was planning on getting and the guy was kinda condescending to me, asking why would I want a smart phone if I don't have a data plan. I explained to him that the phone has WiFi capabilities and that would be enough for me, the phone has other capabilities, I don't care to have a data plan. He then told me that I would still be charged data rates for using WiFi. At this point I was done being nice with him and got a little condescending myself. I asked to clarify, that if I used MY INTERNET that I PAY FOR, that has nothing to do with T-Mobile, that T-Mobile would charge me for using it? He said yes. BTW, I currently have an Android phone and the same T-Mobile service I did then (no data plan). I use my WiFi at home all the time. :D

From my almost 10 years working in a supermarket... Yeah, I've seen some interesting things myself and especially around the holidays. You'd think people would be in better moods, but it's really the opposite. Think buying Christmas gifts is bad? No, fucking with their dinner is what really sets them off. I find it hilarious how pissed people will get over something being out of stock (it's food - theirs always substitutes) or fresh food not being up to someone's ridiculous standards. I think the most bizarre event that I saw around the holidays was when a customer didn't like the way his items were being bagged at the checkout and flipped out. He made some 17 year old girl cashier cry and threw a bag of groceries at the kid that was bagging.

Whether I was in a good or bad mood from the start, after a few years I came to just match whatever attitude the customer had. Nice, or even just normal, you got nothing but smiles and as much help as I was able to give. Come up to me with a nasty attitude though and you got one right back.

There were (and probably still are) 2 or 3 ladies that work the customer service counter that are in permanent bitch mode for whatever reason. It baffles me. I can understand losing your patience with a customer that's a total ass hole, but they had 0 patience from the get go with every customer. I would notice this all the time, and always think to myself, "How do they get away with this?"

Heh, which reminds me of this one time... There was an elderly lady at the customer service counter buying stamps or lotto or whatever, and an old man waiting behind her. Her transaction finished and I guess she was taking too long to buy her change in her wallet or whatever so the old man said something like, "Hurry up." She turned around and very politely said, "You need a little patience." He said, "Go fuck yourself." Me, personally, I would have told him to leave and never come back. He was only buying a newspaper.

No one put on a Santa hat this year (or in Ack's case a Kwanzaa hat)? I've been meaning to, but keep forgetting.

edit: Speaking of putting on a Santa hat... I never "played Santa" before. That is, until yesterday. Yesterday was the Christmas thing at the office. They had a lunch in, did a raffle thing, a secret Santa thing, etc. Some one brought in a Santa costume (as well as an elf costume) but no one wanted to wear it. We finally talked our one (pretty jolly and about the correct build) friend into wearing it, but he wouldn't fit. So because it takes almost no convincing to get me to do just about anything, I ended up putting it on just to goof around. I walked around for a few minutes to annoy a few co-workers, then took it off.

I gotta say, I have new respect for people that play Santa. Those costumes aren't comfortable, to say the least. The beard and wig are pretty annoying and itchy, and over all it's extremely hot to wear. I was sweating like crazy, and I'm not the sweaty type.

So after the lunch, I was kinda forced to put it back on for the secret Santa thing. I was wearing this stupid costume, and still really full from lunch, it wasn't a lot of fun. But I goofed around, said some slightly inappropriate things in character (and in front of HR!) and ended up in the company photos as Santa. I guess I was the only one stupid and goofy enough to do it. I have little shame, but every one seemed to enjoy it so it's all good.

I highly believe in manners, but we all know that in this world you will always face the disrespectful rude people. So when you work in customer service, just be prepared for it and accept for it as the norm.

@Ziggy

I can't believe its been a year since Erik_Twice had a santa hat on his avatar... time flies

You know, I intended to and totally forgot. So here's mine, for what's left of the month.

Loved your Santa story. Way to go.
