Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
Sonic games reflects the "90s" more than anything else probably, that game encapsulates a whole decade right from the menu screen. Am not sure how it does it though...
Who owns the 3DO rights now btw?

I own a 3DO and three games.
Micro Cabin was an amazing RPG developer back in the 80s/90s. Their games are very Falcom-esque.
That game is legitimately awesome. Now that I own PDS I believe it's the most expensive game still on my Want List. Sigh.KalessinDB wrote: Time to throw down on some Lucienne's Quest.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
I know I'm late, but NOOOOO. This is awful. The game is meticulously crafted around the player using the environment to gain speed, and maintaining said speed while traversing the stages. Being able to hit full speed on a dime negates what makes Sonic 1 so great in the first place.fastbilly1 wrote:Sonic 1 with spindash is the best Sonic.
And TSTR, you can actually go fast enough to outrun the screen, and even die due to the screen not moving the kill-plane quickly enough, WITHOUT a spindash.
You can go insanely fast in Green Hill, Spring Yard, and Starlight, and all take a slightly different approach. These stages being staggered with Marble and Lab, which take a different focus on speed. Marble is all about the stage-timed platforms. When really pushing the timer, you'll realize that you have veeery small gaps to make it under closing blocks, or make certain jumps, especially when combined with on-screen timers. Lab is all about not needing to stop for air bubbles, and you can clear all 3 acts with only 1 air bubble. And Lab's boss is the best boss in the game, because it is entirely about speed and precision.
Sonic 1 is genius, through and through. Sadly, it does not convey its genius to the player very well, its one major downfall. Conveying things like slope physics, speed cap, and air speed gain is not as easy as conveying "Jump over or on a goomba or you'll die" though, which I assume is why Sonic 2 has a spindash, to allow players to, if only for a moment, experience what playing Sonic for speed is really like. Sadly, this takes away the risk/reward of quick play, since speed can be gained by just standing still.

Sonic 1 with spindash makes it my favorite Sonic. I like the designs of Sonic 1's stages the most, though I think two has the best music, but like you said the game does not teach you the physics as well as it should. So by giving me that crutch, I can enjoy Sonic 1 more often.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
Thats totally fair.
Its unfortunate, a simple demo screen showing a player actually play the game as intended would have done a lot for Sonic 1, and the franchise as a whole. Just hoping players decide to speedrun your game is not good design, and it was such an easy thing to fix, though not in as natural a way as say, Mario or Mega Man X.
The only spot I can think of where the game even tries to lead the player into a slope jump is Spring Yard 2, where ring placement leads you to want to jump to said rings, and with good timing this jump can actually throw you straight to the goalpost. Sadly, dong this only one time, and half way through the game, is just not enough.
Still, once you have a handle on the game, it is one hell of an experience, nearing arcade-level precision and enjoyment.
All this talk is making me want to pick the game back up and start working on my speedrun again

Did I sell you that? I know you have my Vectrex, and I know I sold someone my FZ-01 with a couple disc-only's but I can't remember who for the life of me.BoneSnapDeez wrote:I own a 3DO and three games.

Anyway... yeah I'm looking forward to checking it out. So many good games, so little time.

I just want everyone to drop what they are doing and go play Captain Toad.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?
