Portland, Oregon. Best city in the US.
Other than that, everyplace has its pros and cons. You basically just decide what you want. Lots of people, less people, coastline, lakes, mountains, coniferous forests, desert, whatever.
The Northeast is where I live currently, and it's not bad at all. Seasonal weather is a big plus, as well as the beaches, forests, mountains, lakes, and cities being all within 20 minutes drive. Boston is pretty harsh as far as attitudes and congeniality, but if you don't like the city you can stay out of it. As a plus side, Boston has a lot of great things to do for recreation and many many people in a small small area, which basically ensures interaction and interesting people.
Jazz at the Top of the Hub is the shit.
Look it up.

I lived in CA for three years -- that was more than enough for me...

True. I have no intention of moving back and I couldn't recommend someone spending more than a year there. I like it much more than I used to now that I only live there for 1-4 week snippets. Come north to Lincoln, NE. The crappy economy is creeping in, but it's not as bad as most places. My company, Perot Systems, is actually hiring unlike most places. Not sure that will last much longer though, they've said no raises until further notice and they've cut 401k contributions in half starting next month. But that sure beats laying people off....
Lincoln is a college town and has lots of geeks. We have a few, but could be better, retro game stores. One store organizes retro gaming tournaments, mostly among the college aged crowd.
Just don't buy property, our property taxes SUCK. The cost of living other than that is pretty reasonable.

Ow! My small intestine!

Michigan's not bad, but the job market is terrible. It is especially nice if you're into the outdoorsy stuff --- including snow and water sports (which I'm not).equalsign wrote:How's Michigan? I'm currently scouting for cool places to live.
But I like the fact that its rather "normal". There's also some nice cities around Detroit.

I really hate Texas, but Austin is alright with me. Just stay away from 6th Street and be prepared to see a lot of bums.AwesomeMonstar wrote:If you dig the texas deal, try austin. Young crow, probably geeky, great music scene.

I've lived in the suburbs of New York and New Jersey my whole life. All-in-all, I love it. The people are interesting, a product of the cities that fuel their lives, work is just a commute away, and there's always something to do.
Being close to NYC just seems to make everything more awesome, while the fact that it' suburbia gives towns a pleasant "hometown" kind of feeling.

It's something like that; I don't remember the exact statistic. I think it's a function of the large number of tech companies out here, which require the degree. What's really great, though, is that even thoug the city is educated they can't understand that if the road gets icy you should put down salt.equalsign wrote:Seattle would be an awesome place for a geek. I hope to live there myself someday. But isn't it also the most college educated large city in the United States? I thought I heard that something like 50 percent of the adults there hold at least a Bachelor's degree![]()
