That gives an overview of the full century? I'd have to think about that as I don't think there have been many great books on the subject....most histories look at a specific set of years/decades.

That said, my stock answer for an American History book everyone should read is:

You should read the whole thing...but the second half is about the Twentieth Century.

Sure...but Zinn's book is basically a critique on most other history books. And a very good one, I think.

But yeah, it isn't a great starting place necessarily - it serves to augment/adjust a more "standard" education in American history.

As an addendum to the previously suggested text, here are a few more:

Twentieth-Century America: A Brief History by Thomas Reeves

A People's History of American Empire by Howard Zinn(as an extension of Ds' previous suggestion)

Opposiving Viewpoints in American History Vol II edited by William Dudley

American Horizons: U.S. History in a Global Context, Volume II: Since 1865 by Michael Schaller, Robert Schulzinger, John Bezis-Selfa, Janette Thomas Greenwood, and more. It should be noted that this book hasn't been released yet, but the perspective may interest you.

This provides a variety of viewpoints on the topic, as well as some historical documents in Opposing Viewpoints. Most of these focus on post-US Civil War history, which is probably the most important event in domestic US history.

Ds and I both want to know if you're interested in specific aspects of US history though! Domestic and international politics, military history, indigenous peoples history, the Civil Rights movements of various minorities, scientific discoveries, mass communication and entertainment, art, etc. Is there a particular angle you want to explore?

You mean a book on current international relations?

So something like Geopolitics: The Geography of International Relations? Or would you be more interested in something along the lines of Samuel P. Huntington's The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of the World Order?

Or you could go with a classic, like John Spanier's Games Nations Play. At this point it's getting a little out of date, but it's a good look at superpower relations.

At first i wanted book just about racism/Civil rights, but now i want more general book - politic/military/sciene etc. (I don't mind more books, each one about different topics)

And sorry for my poor english, i understand well but my sentence construction is pretty bad.
