Why do we measure the success of a console by the number of units they sold? Shouldn't we measure it by the amount of profit the manufacturer made? After all, the more profitable business is the more successful business right?

This thought came to me when I was thinking that Wii sold 20m over ps3, and about 35m units of Mario Kart. But PS3 has about 7 Call of Duties which each sold I would say an average of 9m.

Is it possible that whatever Sony lost in console sales vs the Wii, it more than covered that loss through software sales?

Was there a console where even though it did not sell the most of its generation, it sold the highest number of games in total?

The success of a console is determined by how much I enjoy it.

The PS3 will most likely become the highest selling console of its era very soon.

Well the Wii was being sold at a profit from day one, the PS3 didn't start breaking even till...I think 2009? Also remember that most software sold on the Wii was made by Nintendo themselves, so they made about 3 times as much money for each Nintendo game sold compared to each 3rt party developed game.

Lastly, it's not like any of this matter, BoneSnapDeez is right. If i had space in my sig, I would QFT that.

I'm not saying that it can't, and I truly believe it deserves to, but since the PS3 and PS4 are much closer in price than the PS2 and PS3 were when the PS3 launched, I don't know if we'll see that happen. Though it will get very close.

....wow, it's amazing to think, but this generation was the most succesful ever. Almost 300 million consoles sold and each of the big 3 almost had an equal share of the pie.

EDIT

fuck it, I was able to squeeze this bad baby in :D

I agree.

To note, Decay was ported to PC as well, and can be played through mod support. It's interesting, but I think Opposing Force is the best expansion for the first game.

Valkyria Chronicles is coming to PC!

It seems like every other week we're getting surprise announcements of previously console-only titles being ported to PC. This is awesome news. If they can bring Heavy Rain, Catherine and 3D Dot Game Heroes to PC I can sell my PS3 haha.
