Copyright be damned, I'm enjoying the hell out of my $79 machine. It's tipped the scales for me from collector back over to player. Plus my kids are always curious about what I am playing.

I had auto-notify set up on a few places that weren't price gauging on top of the already gauged price. New egg for example. It came back in stock and they hiked the already high price up $10 to $159.99. I think I'm going to wait for the hype to die down then I'll pick one up.

I don't see anything really on this $160 price revision on the R5 being true. Is this some retail scheme to play off the hype?

Well they're dumb. I brought it up with the tech yesterday, while I was sleeping overnight I got written back he was not thrilled to learn about it from me and not the company. :) They have some nerve.

I wonder what the new hardware looks like. RetroRGB had a good teardown of the initial version: http://retrorgb.com/teardown.html

Id be willing to bet a lot of money that the higher build quality is probably something to do with the pins/connectors. Either a part that allows them to eject more easily or just pins that are sturdier and don't bend as easily.

I suspect (as other mentioned) Hyperkin has raised the price in case of a court battle of the emulators.
