7/5: Mario Kart 8 (WiiU)
7/26: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
8/17:New Super Luigi Bros. U (WiiU)

Super Luigi Bros is fantastic. It was one of the most engrossing and compelling gaming experiences I have had in a long, long time. Everything about the game is superb and I feel like the designers, while they were going through the motions with the original Super Mario Bros U, really challenged themselves to make something special with this one.

I am torn on whether to 100% this game or not: I have about 85% of the star coins so it wouldn't take too terribly long. I think I may end up setting this one aside for now so that I have some content to come back to. Also, these last few levels were pretty damn hard - Star Road looks to be absolutely brutal.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

36. Fatal Frame* (PS2)

* = replay

Yoshi's Island, this may have been the first time I've completely run through it since the SNES days. I definitely recall getting 100% on it in the past though, but damn getting through this beast was enough for me this time. Feels like it may overstay its welcome just a tad and there was one entire world I wasn't a fan of (the monkey/mud one), but off and on the game was calling me back. So it was fun overall, it's just hard to compare to the real Mario games with how different it feels.

The funny thing is how I still think it has one of the most atmospheric cave themes of all time, not to mention the graphics are great in them too.

Super Mario Bros 2... always been a fan. Not much to say, it's still a blast with more interesting boss fights than the other games. But it still cracks me up how weird some of the concepts were for some parts, like having to fly on eggs to get across a stage, having to jump on enemies as platforms through some waterfalls, etc. It's definitely got some tough weird moments. Great stuff though. One thing in particular I've always liked about this one is how connected the levels are. I've always liked the last level a lot too, huge castle with a lot of enemies.

Fatal Frame... this is picking up a replay I started last year, haha. Finally just sat down and blasted through the rest. It's still creepy, but I've aged and so has this game. Some of the ghosts were just straight up cheap and annoying. Lots of backtracking. etc. It was fun to revisit, but I have fonder memories of playing this with a big group of friends when it came out.

I am however, looking forward to playing 2-3. 2 my friends and I played a lot of too, but never finished it. I've never touched 3. I'm hoping both improve some mechanics, the combat, and lay off on the backtracking. Hopefully they're more polished. It'll be interesting to hit them up.

I definitely hope we get the new Wii U one. It'd be nice if they gave us an HD port of 4 since we never got it...

I absolutely DESPISE this game

Guacamelee is not a game that anyone ever said was easy, and yet they felt the need to make combat even MORE obnoxious and annoying than its predecessor. New, obnoxious enemies that can disappear and reappear at will. New, obnoxious enemies with unblockable attacks. They've also reworked several combat scenarios to make them more annoying than they were, including several areas where they pretty much just throw every goddamn enemy than can at you in a royal clusterfuck. Apparently, these fights are supposed to facilitate the new Intenso ability, but apparently no one every told the idiots at Drinkbox Studios that super modes are supposed to make you INVINCIBLE

Also, some of the enemy combinations they throw at you now are far cheaper than anything I recall in the original Guacamelee, like enclosing you in a tiny room with a sub boss with unblockable attacks, while several enemies that you can't reach throw projectiles at you. I also realized while playing this certain things that were cheap even in the original game, like the fact that enemies in a different dimensional plane than you can attack you at will, yet the game doesn't allow you to attack them unless you switch planes i.e. cheap, bullshit. Enemies should have to play by all the same rules the player does. Game Design 101.

This game is obnoxious. I'm getting so sick and tired of "hardcore" games, because it always just translates to cheap, unfair bullshit and this game is chock full of cheap shit. Get use to cheap hits, you take a LOT of them in this game

Oh, and the game also has some pointless, new areas and a cheap, new boss
I thought Guacamelee was pretty easy. I mean, I could beat it and it isn't a genre that I excel at...I'd certainly not lump it in with masochistic stuff like Super Meat Boy or VVVVV. I don't think it had ANY "cheap, unfair bullshit."

This sems to be a pattern of critique for you with any game you fnd challenging...

I am going to mimic DSH's sentiments on this one. I found the game to have some challenging moments that really made you utilize the entire moveset that really rode that line between challenging and frustrating, but never really crossed over. I loved it.

Games Beaten: 2013 2012 2011 2010

I played the first D&D but, like noise, I don't really care for these games a whole lot. They are some of my least favorite marquee beat-em-ups. I also think I think I preferred the games when I played them on the 360 a year or so ago. I'll play the next one as part of TR, but I probably won't love it either.

I beat Reaper of Souls earlier this year with the character I first beat Diablo III with back when it came out, but I wanted to try a run through of the main game with a different class on a harder difficulty, so that's what I played a fair amount of this weekend. I am considering moving one or both characters towards Paragon status and seeing what all that's about, as I really like this game and is now one of the few that I've ever sunk 50+ hours into...

I hope to play a lot between now and the end of the month, as I fell behind a bit of where I wanted to be over the past few weeks. Fingers crossed!

The Last of Us: Remastered- This was my Game of the Generation for last gen and #3 in my Top 3 Games of All time. Simply a masterpiece. The only video game I have given a '10' for story. I loved the gameplay as well. The PS4 version also runs at 1080p/60fps....which adds to an already razor sharp presentation. Playing my Survivor+ run now for the Platinum....and the story is still just as emotional as my first playthough on PS3 last year. I could go on and on about this game. I love it.

Ninja Gaiden 2- Even though the first one is my favorite game of all time, I never really played this one much as a kid. I watched my brother play it back in the day but I never gave it a shot myself. Honestly I was kind of let down by this one. Still has the addictive gameplay of the first, but the bosses were way easy. I also felt there were more "cheap deaths" in this one. Multiple birds/bats spawning at the most inopportune times (i.e. when you're in a mid air jump), and the enemy respawns that happen if you just move the screen over just a bit and then go back. I know this was all part of the game design and adds to the overall difficulty of the game. But I just wish they would have taken some of that 'cheapness' away from the stages and added it to the bosses. I felt the first one had a perfect balance of that. The story was ok. I still hate the fact that
Ryu let the Dragon Sword turn into a ball of light to save Irene. She was annoying. It always confused me too when Ninja Gaiden 3 came out and Ryu had his Dragon Sword again.
Only until recently did I learn that NG3 takes place in between 1 and 2. Anyways I'm glad I finally beat this one. Now on to Ninja Gaiden 3.

Shadow of Mystara is actually the second one. Tower of Doom is the first.

If you didn't like Shadow, you're not going to like how stripped back Tower of Doom feels methinks
