I've joined a speculative writers group, and the horror fans in it are already starting to buzz about what they'll be watching and reading. And I'm pretty sure I've already been invited to a Halloween party that hasn't yet officially been scheduled.

I ended up seeing The Hundred-Foot Journey over the weekend. Which could easily be subtitled "High Class Food Porn". The movie is about Cooking with a capital C, and I thought it was interesting to see how the main character develops as he is exposed to more culinary arts and traditions over the course of the film.

Cheap - Check
Campy - Check
Corny - Check
Fun - Check
This is an old favorite of mine. I bought it from Suncoast on VHS back in the day for $20. Bought it on DVD for $15. Bought it on Blu for $20. I still like it better than the first, just barely, but it doesn't try to be something it isn't. They knew they were making a campy horror flick and they had fun with it. The demons are still pretty good considering the budget. It's a good movie to chill and watch. Nothing pretentious.

Watched The Sky Crawlers last night.
Decent flick but definitely not what I was expecting going in. Went in kind of expecting at least a moderate level of action with a good portion of hte movie set in flight but instead ended up watching a 2 hour mind bender. I would say 95% of the film is focused on the characters on the ground with 5% being very well animated but fast flight sequences which usually are only 3-4 minutes long max with a lot of the action taking place off screen. The first half of the movie just feels kind of awkward and off which is intended since they hardly tell you anything and a lot of the characters have very numb almost robotic personalities which is also intended
. Things do pick up by the second half which basically lays just about everything on the table with a ton of revelations. However the film as a whole can be quite confusing at times and tries to push a philosophical message about the cycle of war and life. The conclusion isn't very satisfying either unless you like very open endings.
Quality wise it is a great film in terms of story and animation. Entertainment wise it can be pretty stale unless you are into slow films that make you think.
Watched with subs didn't bother with the dub. Interestingly enough almost all the communications in the air are in English and since their base is in Europe whenever locals are around they will sometimes swap over to English.

I haven't read the book, no. Honestly, I've watched more movies based off le Carré's work than I've read the novels, so I can't really give you a good comparison on that.Ack wrote:Have you read the novel? I'm a big le Carré fan but haven't read this one yet. I'm wondering if I should take the time to see the film before reading the novel or vice versa.Michi wrote:Last week I saw A Most Wanted Man. It's nice thriller based off of a John le Carré novel, so if you're at all familiar with John le Carré's work you should know exactly what to expect: espionage, terrorism, betrayal... You know the drill. Hoffman is excellent, though seeing him up on the big screen and knowing that he's gone was quite saddening.
Also saw Guardians of the Galaxy today and I don't really have anything to add that hasn't been covered in the last few pages. If you enjoy Marvel movies then go see it.
That said though, the movie feels distinctly le Carré. If I'd gone in not knowing what it was based on I probably would have figured it out about half way through.

Inexplicably weeks after the trailer first drops...it lands on shelves without so much as a whisper...
