In fairness, I should mention that I played it on hard mode. That said. Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty! has some of the cheapest, most obnoxious and sadistic level designs I've ever seen, made more obnoxious by the game's absolutely horrid control scheme

If you've never played an Oddworld game, try Oddworld Munch's Odyssee HD. It's far better than this crap. This game hasn't aged well and is far worse than I remember. Wish I had my nostalgia goggles for this one.

Despite its cutesy exterior, this is one of the most mean spirited games I've ever played.
That surprises the crap out of me... I have to say Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee (the original on the Playstation) is one of my most favorite games ever that I also only just played for the first time a year and a half ago. I thought everything about it was great from the abilities to control the enemies with the chant, to saving the modukons, riding the animalsl, baiting enemies with objects; just so many great gameplay mechanics for solving the puzzles packed in there, and not to mention the art and atmosphere of it all. And that's just listing some of the things I love about it. Maybe the remake changed things? What other cinematic platformers have you played that you think bests this?

For the record I don't think playing a sub-standard 3D platformer is a good entry point to what the series is all about.
It's better designed than New and Tasty, and isn't a mediocre shooter pretending to be an Oddworld game like Stranger's Wrath. For my money, it's the best game in the series

EDIT: But like in 90% of things in my life, I disagree with the majority opinion

Ninja Gaiden- So I finally received my Retron 5 this last weekend, and what better way to break its cherry than playing and beating my #1 favorite game of All Time? Answer: There is no better way.

I love this game. So much. It will forever be my favorite game of all time because, to me, it's the perfect blend of great gameplay, great story, and great challenge. Also sprinkle in childhood nostalgia and you've got a masterpiece.

After all these years I still have a little trouble with the end. It's not so much the actual fights with Jaquio and the Demon....it's getting there that is the pain. Well, let me correct that....getting there with Jump-n-Slash. Because if you can get to Jaquio with Jump-n-Slash, then you can 1 shot him with that, and I 2-shotted the Demon with it.

I never did play much of Ninja Gaiden 2 or Ninja Gaiden 3, but yesterday after beating this I went out and bought a copy of NG2.

30. The Simpsons (Arcade)(Beat 'Em Up)

On Friday I swung by an arcade/bar near my place to meet up with some coworkers and play a few rounds of games while drinking a few beers. When I arrived, the Simpsons beat 'em up game was free of players, so I hopped on with Homer and beat the game with a little help from another dude hopping in as Lisa. Hijinks ensued, but I need to find out how the scoring system works. I beat it but was about 25 points below the high score they have recorded there.

I also played through Metal Slug two and a half times, the first two just on my own. For the half, I had been talking to a dude who was wiping the floor with all challengers on Mortal Kombat 2, and his buddy had hopped into Metal Slug, so we moved over there to watch...and his buddy wasn't very good. Truth be told, he was getting his ass kicked, and both he and the MK2 guy started going on and on about how hard Metal Slug is.

I laughed and told them I could beat the first three levels of Metal Slug(half the game) on a single credit. They both declared "Bullshit! Prove it." So I told them to pay for the game, and I took my turn as second player(I had noticed the first player has a sticky shoot button). I then proceeded to beat half of Metal Slug on a quarter and then threw myself onto the first enemy at the start of the fourth level, while they're shouting the whole time. The thing is, somebody in that bar has come in and gotten a 1CC I suspect, because the high score is over 1,000,000 points. But these guys didn't know that, so...meh.

Analogue: A Hate Story PC

Something about waifus, 2D, and ai or some such.

Another one of these not-a-game games. Analogue is a relatively well constructed, if short, visual novel that falls into a few of the trappings of otaku-ness but at the same time recognizes it and does some really fun things as well. The characterization is pretty deep considering what it has to work with. You're basically hacking into a derelict space ship inhabited with two AIs and a bunch of log files. Most of the game is simply reading and doing simple conversations with the ai. However, the real fun comes in one segment of the game where you must use a terminal to navigate your way and save yourself from destruction. It's not particularly challenging but I would like to see more of it. Hate Plus, the sequel, is apparently very good and I look forward to playing it. I believe saves cross over and so it was worthwhile to have played Analogue then. I guess if you have a ten dollar bill to spare and are into these sorts of things I would recommend it. I've certainly spent more on much worse pieces of entertainment.

Return Fire is a 3DO game that - like most of the 3DO's best games - was ported to the PS1.

My children loved watching me play this game, and they were heavily invested in the story. I loved playing the game, and I spent many evenings playing it with both of them cuddled up to me. (I love my children immensely, and it was a pretty great gaming experience.)

The game itself is delightful 2D platformer that is simply overflowing with charm. (It is easily the most charming game I have played since Luigi's Mansion.) It controls wonderfully; the graphics and sound are top-notch; and it is loaded with secrets. The game's art direction and presentation, however, push it from "good" to "excellent". The game is presented as a very, very elaborate vaudeville-era puppet show, and it maintains this aesthetic throughout its seven "acts". Moreover, the game's characters - and its stupendous narrator - are constantly breaking the fourth wall, and playing the game actually leaves you with the impression that you are a participant in an amazing (if slightly chaotic) stage production.

In short, I loved this game. It ranks among the greatest 2D platformers of its generation; it has the best art direction outside of Okami; and I highly, highly recommend it.
