Her scheduled surgeon has some less than glowing reviews online and nobody else within a reasonable distance will take our insurance or they aren't accepting new patients.
This does little to help my outlook. I know there will always be cases of unsatisfied "customers" if you will, but...."He killed my grandmother." is not what I want to see.
Keep in mind, humanity always focuses on the negative, and it will stay in your mind far more than the positive. And a lot of people will want to point blame over the loss of a loved one, even if the individual performing an operation was in no way at fault. For all you know, he tried his damndest and did far more to save somebody's grandmother than was required of him, and he'll still be blamed for her death.
Second, yeah, it sounds like her full thyroid will need to be removed just to be safe. She'll need medication to make up for the loss of hormones, but other than that her life will be completely normal when all is said and done, jp. I know you're worried, but things will be ok!
Don't hold it all in, let things out to friends if needed. Rely on others around you so you can be strong and supportive where you need to be. Someone else said thyroid removal wasn't a big deal, so I'm sure it will be fine.

Seconded.
Never pass up on a shoulder to lean on.
My Mother had hers removed plus chemo and the whole ordeal, and now all is fine.

I've been there. When I had my major surgeries I went online and looked looked at all of the things that could possibly go wrong and literally made myself much sicker with worry until I realized I just had to shut that stuff out because it only made the situation worse. Whatever was going to happen was going to happen and the risks outweighed the alternative.
Most people who are going to bother to leave reviews online are the ones who have a chip on their shoulder. Don't let that get to you.

Do you live in a dorm too? Why can't you take him with you when you go to school?
Smuggle him in a suitcase.

So yeah remembering a few people on this site(apple and lisa) i had one of those moments when I went for a refill for my roo cup. The lady at the desk asked me if i remembered her, it took me a second and then it was like oh yea...basically I had this guy who went to high school with me who was a cross-dresser(and by that I mean that he was able to wear higher heels than most girls I knew and apprently had no problem doing his hair better than most girls too). I kinda felt like he might be doing that kind of thing soon and I really went red as soon as i realized who it was because I got confused at first and then turned red afterwards

I don't work for them, but felt compelled to spread the word.
Thanks again for all the support guys. I am working on it. I will try to be less of a debbie downer, it's just been difficult lately. I guess if the surgeon was terribly negligent he wouldn't be in practice for over 26 years in the same field. It is just a kick in the gut to see some of the stuff people put. If he does a good job I am going to put a positive review in there so the next guy who goes can get a little reassurance.

Don't forget that most people don't actually understand medicine. If the reviews are things like "he left a pair of forceps in me!" then yeah, that's a worry. If the review is "he didn't treat me like a unique snowflake and wouldn't give me a hug and a lollypop" then who cares?

I took this into account when reading (the admittedly one sided) argument of a couple people. Some just didn't like his bedside manner and stupid things like that. Two particular cases went in depth about the procedures and what happened. Now, like you said most people don't understand medicine, and neither do I...so was he negligent? I don't know. I'm just thinking "I wish I hadn't read that." especially when I found there were no suitable alternatives. Even doctors make mistakes though and I'm not sure that they all constitute negligence. It's hard I guess when you want someone who you put your life in their hands to be perfect and it just can't be that way. I'm not exactly being driven by logic in this whole thing at the moment, unfortunately.
