This should be in the What you be chewing and digestin'? Thread, but:

My Mother in law insists that I cook dinner instead of going out tonight as she loves my cooking (who doesn't?). Of course I asked, "Whaddaya want?".

Her response was to throw her some options.

Here is what I have so far:

Italian: Osso Buco w/ baked tomatoes and smoked mozzarella

Jamaican: Coconut shrimp w/ papaya and mango

French: Seared Steaks with a Cote de Rhone sauce, with roasted eggplant

Greek: Lamb chops with plums, Greek yogurt, spices, olives, and spinach. Side of bulgar

'Mericun: Bacon wrapped sea scallops with mixed veggies and a lemon orzo

I think anyway, I win.

Smile- came out to one of my cousins. He was accepting, which gives me a little bit of hope for dealing with the rest of my family (or at the very least people to back me up).

Always good to have people on your side with potentially difficult discussions.

:|  - My wife needs a thyroidectomy(sp?), her biopsy results aren't even back so cancer isn't ruled out. I'm terrified, and feeling helpless to protect her.

Things will get better Jp1.

Going to eat Greek tonight. Lamb chops are more like ribeyes. Over an inch thick, bone in...pics to follow if we don't devour them on the spot.

She'll be ok, jp. Do you know what type of thyroidectomy? Partial, complete, hemi, etc.? She will likely be laid up a few weeks afterward to heal, but she should be able to head home after 24 hours at most. She may need to be on medication afterwards to deal with hyperthyroidism, but beyond that, complications tend to be quite rare(like less than 5% rare).

Like Ack mentioned, she'll be ok.

My Mother had the same surgery due to thyroid cancer, and besides some continuous medication, she's healthy.

Thanks guys. Ack, Luke, Samson, I appreciate it. The Docs explained it too, but they were so dismissive that it almost made it more concerning.

Ack, she needs to have at least the left half removed due to it being almost entirely "nodules" and quite large. In the case of the right half it depends on what the inspection of the left half looks like, or possibly pathology results, if it needs removal as well.

I know it is not considered a "dangerous" surgery but my wife is everything to me and being powerless to protect her is killing me. I've been doing my level best to put on a front for her benefit but she can see right through it. I was almost in tears trying to tell her that there wasn't anything to worry about.

Her mom died from cancer at close to her age (when she was 12), four of her aunts and uncles died of cancer younger than 50, her Grandparents both died this past year. It's scary for her.

I don't even know how to deal. My Great Grandmother is 98 years old and still works the kitchen when folks visit. My Grandmother can almost run circles around me. I've never lost anyone...which has been extremely fortunate at my age, and I'm grateful...but ill equipped to help in situations like this.
