Hey guys, I've been busy lately and haven't been on the site much. I did take the time to run through a handful of PC games and expansions, so I haven't been completely out of the game. But I've not been active the way I used to be.
Anyway, considering the amount, I'm going to have to go with shorthand stuff. So here we go:
Scratches - Short, and a decent first game for a horror point and click, though puzzles aren't always obvious, and the plot is at times bland. Still, there are a couple of genuinely creepy moments, and the audio is used quite effectively.
Evoland - It's a fun take on the history of the RPG genre, though it's like a shorthand form that doesn't really explore anything in depth and never moves beyond its premise to any sort of interesting insight.
Dead Pixels - I beat this last year and just replayed it a bit this year. It's still fun though gets stale. Thankfully there is some replay value in the alternate modes, though the game is much more of a distraction than anything else.
Dungeon Defenders - Well the base game was good. The expanded PC levels quickly turn into a horribly-balanced nightmare however, and they do not do a good job of continuing the game in my opinion.
Borderlands DLC - I just got a newer PC and decided to go back to Borderlands and finish all of the DLC expansions and grab the remaining achievements. I've gotten through three of the four expansions and have only 8 achievements to go along with Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot, which I find more annoying than anything else. Eh, I'll probably cheese my way through it with a few friends. The other expansions were a lot more fun, though not without their problems.

Re: Games Beaten 2014
Mad Moxxi was terrible DLC. But all the Borderlands DLC was outdone by Tiny Tina's. I kinda would like to see Gearbox make a full game based around the concept of that DLC; actually acting out a D&D session and hearing the various voiceovers for actions and whatnot.

Yeah, my friends all tell me that BL2 is just superior to BL in every way, and that Mad Moxxi was by far the worst of the DLC expansions(Claptrap's collect-a-thon achievements are also pretty crappy due to their hideously low drop rate). I discovered you can technically earn experience while playing it because it still tracks kills for the various XP challenges, but there should have been greater rewards considering the crap you have to go through to finish it.MrPopo wrote:Mad Moxxi was terrible DLC. Beat assassin's creed 4. 6/10 might dick around in again. Story ends to abruptly.

Re: Games Beaten 2014
I've been meaning to start posting in this thread (or a previous incarnation of it) for a while now. I suppose now is as good of time as any! Thing is, I don't quite remember all the games in 2014 that I've beaten. I remember 2 besides the game I just beat now, but I think there might have been a few more that I can't remember. There's a handful that I'm pretty sure are 2013. Oh well. I start half ass this year, then start fresh next year.
I tried to commit myself to a list of SNES games to beat this year, but I've already failed at it.
Maybe using this thread will help me beat some backlog.
1. Mega Man X (SNES)
2. Mega Man X2 (SNES)
3. Mario Kart 8
3. Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis)
Yes, yes, not a very impressive list compared to some of yous.
I was a SNES kid growing up, but I loved to play Sonic. Over the years, I've beaten 2 and 3 & Knuckles but I just never put the effort into beating the first one. I decided the other night to finally beat it, and now I have. The game isn't terribly long, and it's actually shorter than I thought it was. The only hurdle, for me, was the Labyrinth Zone. And after necrobumping this thread and getting my frustrations out (and some tips!) I was able to get past it. The rest of the game is pretty easy. I was able to clear the next two areas and the final boss without much hassle.
I just don't like Sonic 1 all that much. Sonic 2 was always my favorite when I was young. Now I think that Sonic 3&K is my favorite. Sonic 1's levels are just so... what's the right word? Shitty? After the first Zone they just seem to drag and some parts are just so slooooow it becomes frustrating. The level designs are just kinda boring, over all. Still, I'd take Sonic 1 over some of the more recent Sonic games, but it's my least favorite of the Genesis games.
And no, I didn't get all the chaos emeralds.

I wonder what you'd think of Sonic CD since the Sonic 1 team did it, when another branch went on and did Sonic 2. I quite like Sonic 1 a lot myself, I think it's a bit more comparable to Mario and standard platformers. Despite the annoyances I really like the water stages too, nothing else quite like them in the rest of the series. The 3 stages per world was cool too. Sonic 2 almost feels a bit more bloated in comparison sometimes. Tons of different worlds, but some of them are nothing special visually, musically, etc.
CD and S&K are my favorites.
Sonic 3 would be my least favorite. Outside of Hydro, the ice world, and the final world, I really hate the other levels. It's interesting to wonder if the exact same staff behind 3 handled S&K too, since I think it's infinitely better... but I still enjoy running through them as one huge game connected, as was originally intended I believe.

I feel like I've learned to appreciate Sonic 1 more over the years. It's really great in my opinion, though Labyrinth Zone is dreaded.
Sonic CD is up there for me. Sonic 2 is great.
I played Sonic 3 & Knuckles recently, and really wasn't enjoying it surprisingly.
Sonic 4 isn't even a thing that exists in my mind.

Re: Games Beaten 2014
Sonic 4? Haha yeah.
I think the whole series is pretty different honestly, but I love them all for the most part:
Sonic 1 - More Mario-ish, TALL vertically high level design in most places, lots of platforming
Sonic CD - More high vertical level design with big open levels, lots to do if you want to find the hidden Metal Sonic/enemy projectors etc. Easy to backtrack
Sonic 2 - Get from point A to point B as fast as you can
Sonic 3 / Knuckles - Maybe falling back a bit on Sonic 1 in some ways, much more complex levels for better or worse, lots of triggers and puzzle like design throughout. I feel like these are the ones with the most distinguished various paths and the hidden bonus stage rings are tucked away really well in a lot of places. Great for multiple runs to uncover more hidden stuff. It also helps that Sonic and Knuckles' paths are fairly different and sometimes crossover. It's worth noting Knuckles' campaign is cut short compared to Sonic's.

Re: Games Beaten 2014
that's my problem w/ Sonic 3/Knuckles. The level's are too big and confusing. They're not fun to me. They feel like I'm just struggling to find the way out of them. :\
Re: Games Beaten 2014
I remember reading that before, that one team worked on Sonic CD while another did Sonic 2. I'm not a fan of Sonic CD, go figure.Xeogred wrote:I wonder what you'd think of Sonic CD since the Sonic 1 team did it, when another branch went on and did Sonic 2. I couldn't disagree more.Xeogred wrote:Sonic 2 almost feels a bit more bloated in comparison sometimes. Tons of different worlds, but some of them are nothing special visually, musically, etc.
You know, for the longest time I thought that locking Sonic 3 onto S&K just gave you the same effect that it did with locking Sonic 2 on (playing as Knuckles). I didn't realize until not too long ago that it becomes Sonic 3 & Knuckles, literally both games combined. In my defense, I didn't have a Genesis back when and I never had the box or manual to S&K. After realizing this, I don't look at Sonic 3 and S&K as two separate games anymore. In my mind, only one game exists, and it's called Sonic 3 & Knuckles.Xeogred wrote:CD and S&K are my favorites.
I look at Spring Yard Zone, Casino Night Zone, and Carnival Night Zone to all be the same type of level. But each one was a great improvement from the last. Spring Yard is just boring as hell, and those damn moving squares take forever to get through. Why so many of them? Casio Night always seemed boring to me. It's like half bonus stage half real level. At least Casino Night felt just like a real level. The music never bothered me.Xeogred wrote:Headache inducing:
Ah, I forgot about Sonic 4. I don't hate it, but I didn't like it nearly as much as the Genesis games.noiseredux wrote:Sonic 4 isn't even a thing that exists in my mind.
