Re: Games Beaten 2014
Pretty much. It plays a video, if you press the right buttons at the right times, you live, if you dont, you die. With endless credits it really becomes a movie because you can just keep retrying, but that seems preferred to me, because otherwise it's just rewatching the same movie dozens of times but never seeing the ending.dsheinem wrote:so it's a movie?
It's simple enough to be a DVD menu game. I'm pretty sure it HAS been a DVD menu game. It sucks.

I played it years ago on the Sega CD. I remember dying a lot.alienjesus wrote:Pretty much. It plays a video, if you press the right buttons at the right times, you live, if you dont, you die. By "free play" I just meant that I continued a lot.dsheinem wrote:so it's a movie?
The prompts are like the ones in Time Gal or Road Avenger. They weren't in the arcade game - you literally had to guess. Prompts were added to later ports though.
And yes, it has been released on DVD.

I my be wrong, but I vaguely recall seeing this game with prompts in the arcade. (Perhaps there was a setting for the prompts that could be activated by the cabinet's owner?)noiseredux wrote:The prompts are like the ones in Time Gal or Road Avenger. I also enjoyed Dragon's Lair quite a bit when I played it for this year's summer gaming challenge. I also used the prompts, however, since the game is unduly frustrating without them. (That said, the various death animations are half the fun in that game.)
Re: Games Beaten 2014
I tried Braindead 13 for the Saturn last year which is Lair-style and it was pretty much the most frustrating experience ever.

3. Mirror's Edge (PS3)
4. Orcs & Elves (DS)
5. 3D Dot Game Heroes (PS3)
6. Justice League Heroes: The Flash (GBA)
7. Metal Gear (MSX/PS2)
8. Wario Land: Shake It! (Wii)
9. LittleBigPlanet: Game of the Year Edition (PS3)
10. Drill Dozer (GBA)
11. LittleBigPlanet 2: Special Edition (PS3)
12. South Park: The Stick of Truth (PS3)
13. Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing (PS3)
14: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (PS3)
15. Angry Birds: Star Wars (3DS)

17. Dragon's Lair (ARCADE/DS)
18. Flashback: The Quest for Identity (GEN)

20. Virtual Boy Wario Land (VB)
21. Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition (PS3)
22. Nectaris: Military Madness (PS1)
23. Military Madness (TG16/PS1)
24. Thomas Was Alone (PS3)
25. Ys III: Wanderers from Ys (SNES)
26. Alien Chaos 3D (3DS)
Alien Chaos 3D is great. It combines the best elements of Metal Slug and Robotron 2084 to create a very intense 2D arena/run-and-gun shooter. The game also has a great "cleaning" mechanic that adds a layer of depth. (Basically, you sweep up shell casings and bits of destroyed robots to get additional types of ammunition, and you scrub blast marks off the walls to charge a room-clearing attack. Leaving an arena both enemy-, spot-, and clutter- free is the only way to a high score.) Finally, the boss battles are fantastic.
Sadly, and unlike Boulder Dash XL 3D (the other Giant Media Group 3DS game I played this year), Alien Chaos 3D is far too short. Whereas Boulder Dash 3D XL was overflowing with levels, Alien Chaos 3D's story mode has only 25, and those 25 can be cleared in just a few sittings. (A devoted and skilled player could probably get trough the story mode in just over an hour.) Additionally, the game is not seriously challenging until the last few levels. While the game has a challenge mode that might add some replayability - and while you can always repeat the story levels to earn a higher score (and better medals) - I would be disappointed it I had paid more than $5 for this game.
Thankfully, however, $5 is exactly what I paid for a physical copy(!) of the game, and I can give it a hearty recommendation at that price.
