Man I guess I'm alone that I can't rank them to be honest(since it's hard to compare across generations to me considering hardware limitations and everything and I love galaxy, 64 and sunshine :P )
lisalover1 wrote:I actually prefer the collect-a-thon nature of the 64-Galaxy games; I feel like that kind of level design makes better use of 3D space. While 3D World feels more like a traditional 2D Mario game translated into 3D, the collect-a-thon games feel entirely unique, and as the genre has been all but abandoned these days, I miss it a lot more. That said, Banjo-Kazooie is superior to any of the collect-a-thon Mario games, hands-down.
So I'm not alone in liking collectathon games! though dk64 does take it too far in some respects....it's too bad it's not as popular as it was

I'm of the opinion that ME3 had the best gameplay. Some seem to favor ME2 over it, but I felt like ME3 improved it further and gave you a little more control again.

I can totally agree that ME1 is more of an RPG, more comparable to the KOTOR games and such that came before them. But still, I don't think it was nearly as satisfying or fun as KOTOR either. There were more abilities and stats that I liked, but it really felt like it was confused about what it wanted to be... both ME2 and ME3 trimmed out the fat and I think it was better for that. Arguably more straight up shooters, but good ones at that to me (I usually don't like cover shooters much). Probably helped having control of party in combat. When you play on the harder difficulties, strategy is needed for most encounters and that's when it got really fun.

I haven't got to ME3 yet (I think I'm maybe halfway through ME2). I can agree that ME1 was no where near as satisfying or fun as KOTOR, which is one of my favourite games of all time.

I'm sure I will get back into ME2 soon and hopefully will complete the trilogy by the end of the summer.

I'll be curious to see what you think then. A lot of fans seem to say ME2 is the best in general, but I like ME3 gameplay wise and mostly story wise more too (ending aside, that doesn't run the entire journey for me!). ME2 was a LOT more about the characters and when you really strip it down, I don't think much plot happened. ME3 on the other hand balances it out again and felt like a great mesh of the first two games, still some great characterization, but the plot started moving again.

But the first game still did plot the best to me. The mysterious stuff towards the end was a huge highlight, the ominous reaper stuff, and of course Saren was a great villain I thought. The sequels had the Illusive Man, but really lacked that main driving antagonist that got his hands dirty in my opinion.

I'm a big fan, but overall I don't think the story or writing even compares to Obisidan's KOTOR 2.

I only recently picked up the 2 and 3 in a sale. I've never been able to completely make it through the first one but that will give me new incentive to do so.

Reprise wrote:To elaborate on my reasons for feeling ME1 was better than ME2, I feel ME1 was much more of an RPG and that's what I wanted from the trilogy.

ME1 was a RPG, with some slightly clumsy combat and, at times, repetitive sections (e.g. The driving sections). To be honest, however, I could live with the clumsy combat and those driving sections, because I still found the game engaging, the characters interesting and the story was well executed.

ME2 had a big overhaul and made heavy improvements to the combat and got rid of many of the flaws of ME1 (e.g. No more driving sections). The problem was, it feels, to me, that they dumbed down the RPG elements heavily. It now feels like a shooter, with RPG elements tacked on. The story doesn't engage me as much now, the characters don't interest me (even Shepard seems like a bit of a dick now, regardless of the fact mine is supposed to be Paragon) and the story is boring me. Every mission I do also just feels like shoot shoot shoot, boring dialogue, shoot shoot shoot ad nauseum.
Well, Mass Effect was BioWare's first title under EA. I have always suspected that ME was the result of the KOTOR team being told they needed to make something that was a bit more FPS to appeal to a wider, more EA-style audience. I did like the character elements and RPG bits in ME, but the combat and driving around exploring for resources just drove me batty, and it made up an awfully large portion of the game for a completist like me. ME didn't seem to know how to balance the RPG and action elements of the game very well. ME 2 felt much better to me because, even though it lost some of the RPG elements, it felt better balanced. When I had to do action stuff, the action felt better. And though I had to do less RPG stuff, the RPG stuff that was there still felt good. There was still certainly enough character dialogue and interaction. I guess, for me, I'm willing to see some of the RPG stuff lost in favor of action in exchange for better cohesion.

I'd say, I prefer the premise of Galaxy more but 3D World is definitely a more solid title when it comes to gameplay and level design.

Now, if Galaxy's model was done as masterfully as 3D World is, then it would be my favorite 3D platformer of all time. I hope they return to the Galaxy series.

Also it goes: 3DW > Galaxy > Sunshine > 3DL > 64

Sunshine is great I don't care what the "haters" say.
