I think I lost one or two of my super experienced guys, which was frustrating, but I was able to clean up the rest of the map fairly easily.

Like I said earlier, I have 1 experienced guy and the rest is rookies. I really painted myself into a corner.

after way too many hours, I beat the base defense mission. It wasn't pretty. I was left w/ one soldier left (the only one w/ real experience).

Could be worse. Could have lost your vet. Or you could be playing the original X-COM where enemies could use blaster bombs on you (which are powerful enough to punch holes in the side of a UFO).
