Have you tried R-Type Delta?
Oh yes. I didn't bother trying to finish it, though.
 That was probably a good decision.

(In other words, your ship does not come zooming back onto the screen if you die.) In that sense, it is like Ninja Gaiden (NES). You can continue as much as you want, but it will not make the game any easier. (Continuing in this game just lets you continue practicing a section until you get it right.)
Sounds like my experience with Ninja Gaiden, Ghosts 'n' Goblins, Rastan, and others. There's always "that one spot" I just can't clear and I eventually just shut off the game.

Magician Lord, which I finished earlier this year, was like that too. There's this one platforming segment which is ridiculously hard if your character isn't powered up (and of course you loose all power-ups if you die). Took me about 40 tries to get through that one section.

SotN continues to be awesome. I have left the underground caverns where I found some evil woman with a bunch of giant snakes (I think?). I actually got knocked into a small opening behind her and was able to spam holy water until the fight ended. After the battle I ended up back at the beginning of the castle and now I've entered some other unexplored area. I have 40% completion.

I've been playing in 30-45 minute spurts which is annoying. I need to sit down sometime and just play for like 3 hours straight. Maybe Saturday night.

Started Ys this afternoon. Had a couple of false starts (I kept trying to stab enemies without a sword  ) but eventually got to the stage where I was chopping people down left, right and slightly off centre. Got the Tulwar, some solid armour and just delivered that asshole Luta to his wife.

I'm playing it on PC which means I can change the soundtrack on the fly which is pretty cool. I think I prefer the "complete" soundtrack myself. The chronicles one is a bit too heavy guitar oriented.

Ghegs is a member here and has 1cc'd the game.

Like you said, credit-feeding still forces you to learn everything. Once you know it you can one-life it. If you clear it with credits, you can 1cc.

That, IMO, makes him the greatest shmup player of all time.

I'm still making my way to the marsh cave on and off playing the game. I think I'm finally stocked up on antidotes just trying to make sure I have enough tents now XD
