I think it's quite likely given that the controller in the video has a Smash logo on it instead of saying GameCube. No such controller exists as far as I know.
I already have 5 GC controllers but I would still buy one of those.
It would make sense to design the Gamecube adapter so it shows up as Classic Controllers or Pro Controllers in the WiiU OS. So any game that supports Classic Controllers - ie Mario Kart 8 or VC games, could be played with a Gamecube controller. I have 20ish Cube controllers, from when I use to run a convention and a biyearly lan party that were used for Smash or Mario Kart Double Dash, so I that might factor in my hoping. Well that and I would love to buy a couple Gamecube games on the WiiuVC.

This would be my ideal situation too, as it'd guarantee wider support outside of Smash Bros.
It'd work really for Wii games that have lost the GC compatability too.
As long as they get the control layout right though!

PDP is releasing a "Gamecube inspired" controller that connects to a Wiimote and should work with anything that a Classic Controller Pro does. Supposed to be out alongside Wii U Smash Bros.
That would likely fit most user's needs for a Gamecube controller for VC or whatnot.
After releasing on Friday, Mario Kart 8 is off to one hell of a start. Nintendo has announced that the game sold 1.2 million copies worldwide in its first weekend.
Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said in the statement, "The early response to Mario Kart 8 demonstrates that the best days for Wii U are still ahead. This year's E3 is just days away, and it will be all about the future games for Nintendo platforms. This milestone is a great place to start!"
Ehh I still hope to join those that have already bought mk8...I don't know why but it seemed like a amazing game playing it while waiting for the gamestop at the mall to open

I wonder how many Wii Us were/will be sold related to MK8 (which is why I bought mine). That is a much more important stat than how many copies of the game were sold.
By comparison, for example, Halo 3 (a comparative, early exclusive blockbuster) sold 4 million copies in its first week. Even the new Infamous sold over one million copies in its first week and a half...

Hori actually released a "gamecube inspired" controller that connects to the wiimote during Wii's hey day:
