Well I think I enjoyed what little I did of it before losing my dawn of souls cart so I might as well give it a go anyways later once i finish ff1. I distinctly remember it at least made the story a little more obvious than 1 did during the play through but that was years ago so you might be right XD

I don't care for the fortress course either. I'm usually at least competitive in the first lap, but manage to lose it soon after.

Twilight City really gets me though. Its a straightforward course, but I always get fucked by the computer in some way or another. Last time, in the first few seconds of the race, I went up the first ramp, got knocked out in midair by the fat bastard Mariner, fell behind the ramp, and immediately became irrelevant. I completed the rest of the race flawlessly, but the others gained such a huge lead that I never even saw them again.

Anyway...

Awesome! I'll say congratulations, and I'm sorry you suffered all of that.
I can;t help but feel though, that the game would be exponentially improved by adding a 'kick David Mariner in his fat fucking face' button.
Ain't that the god damn truth.

EDIT:

I've moved on to expert now.

First attempt:

1st
4th (pulled back on a turn and wiped out, totally my fault, but impossible to catch up)
4th (would have been third, got run over within inches of the finish)
3rd (would have been second, same story as above)
Disqualified.

That went well.

I would personally recommend going for 1st on at least the first 3 tracks if you want to try and beat it.

You need 37(!) points to qualify for the podium cutscene, which is equivalent to 5 first places and 2 last place finishes over the 8 courses.

The 5 courses I came first on were Sunny Beach (easy enough), Sunset Bay (sometimes causes problem if the computer pushes you off, but OK otherwise), Drake Lake (easy to win once you get the hang of the poles at the end), Port Blue (partly a fluke, and partly a flawless last run through the shortcut tunnel - which you're forced to take in expert as the regular route is shut) and Twilight City (I always do this flawlessly, but generally come 2nd because the computer are perfect at this course - this time I magically finished 8 seconds ahead despite doing a less than perfect run).

So basically I got lucky on 2 of my wins. I feel thats the best you can hope for.

For what it's worth, I deserved better results on Stormy Fortress and the icy place too, but got screwed over near the end of both. The last course though I did awful, but by that point it didn't matter.

EDIT: And a few tips for the courses for you, spoilered for length:
Sunny beach - If you cut the last corner really tight, you shouldnt have too many issues at all here.
Sunset Bay - The trick is getting the hang of the slalom before the final corner - using B as the waves hit you will stop you jumping, letting you surf through it easily. This trick is handy on lots of courses actually.
Drake Lake - The computer normally isnt that great here, but you need to get the hang of the posts near the end. It's actually a much straighter line than it looks - you just have to dodge around one pole hidden just behind the first yellow buoy and then head straight through basically.
Stormy Fortress - 1st lap go around the course, 2nd and third go through the water channel. You can jump the pole at the start on lap 1 and 2 - on lap one bounce on the first wave and then on the 2nd, pull back a bit to get enough air to sail over. Lap 2 there's just one wave, but holding back should give you enough air to get over. I've never managed it on lap 3 though.
Port Blue - I got around the curvy shortcut bit by tapping the accelerator on the corners instead of holding it. I still hit a few walls though, but didn't bail too badly. The computer will overtake you on the final jump without fail because they're dicks like that.
Twilight City - you need to dive UNDER the first wall. Go up the ramp, angle yourself forwards and land just before the wall. Hold down for a bit and you'll go right under. Go voer the sand like the computer does, then you want to skip the first ramp before the sharp corner (watch out for the mines around it) and also the first ramp in the final straight where there are two (again, watch for the mines). Jumping the last one is essential though.
Icy place whose name I forget - This one isn't TOO bad once you know it, but itll fuck you up the first time. Go around the early jumps, through the channel on the right on the first corner. Lining yourself up for the ice is a pain, but don't let yourself turn too sharply to the side or you'll bail when you hit the water again. When you reach the big jump, take it and turn sharply right in the air to line yourself up for the slalom over the ice flows.
Last course I also forget the name of - Lap one be sure to hit the ramp after the pirate ship and hold forward to dive UNDER the jetty. Lap 2 and 3 you can just drive under the jetty anyway.

Not counting the CDI jokes, do you think it qualifies for worst Zelda game?
No. Zelda II is awesome. It is one of my favorite games in the series. Unlike the other games, it is actually difficult. The combat engine is great, and I appreciate and enjoy the game even more each time I play it.

You're not the only one. I think it's a great game.

I also like FFII quite a bit, but since you are having trouble with FFI, I also guarantee that you will not like it.

.....

I have been working a lot recently, and I have not made much progress with regard to my summer gaming challenge. I have logged just over three hours into R-Type Delta since starting it a few weeks ago. I can now make it through the first two levels without dying...but I cannot yet beat the third, thotally awesome level before running out of credits. I am getting closer, however. (R-Type Delta is great BTW. It is brutally, brutally difficult, but it is totally fair. Assuming it doesn't go off the rails in the second half of the game, it may end up being my favorite game in the series.)

For the longest time I viewed it as the worst first party Zelda game. But three years ago I sat down and forced myself to beat it. And while it is not my favorite Zelda, it is like prfsnl_gmr said, it is different and has an awesome combat engine. I firmly believe if it was not a Zelda title it would be really highly regarded.

I actually like how back in the day sequels would play entirely differently from their predecessors.

Well i'm not really having trouble with FF1 it's just that I get lost and sometimes it's hard(without a walkthrough) to know what to and not to spend money on. Other than that it's been easy so far...(I've got where to go up to marsh cave memorized). It's a fun game, it's just like other games I have a tendency to get a decent ways into it then get busy in real life, then come back to it later and wonder, "wait where the heck am I and where was I going?"

Decided to restart ff1 because I wanted a different party. I'm actually liking this party setup better(warrior, monk, white mage, red mage). Find it weird that the monk had a staff equipped since everything I've seen or read says do not give him a weapon since he's better off w/out it. Red mage feels so much better than having a black mage and the monk seems to be even better than thief.....I may stick with this layout since it seems to be easier to get through some of the battles quicker in this version

You mean like Final Fantasy II? 8)

Even those of you who like Zelda II, would you still concede it's the worst in the series? Or is there another game you'd rank lower?

The game does handle close sword combat better than most similar titles from the era, but it's still miles behind something like Faxanadu.
