Child of Light - PS4

Disappointed with this one, but I'm disappointed with just about everything I play these days. Mediocrity rules the day in the current game industry

The combat system is inspired by the Grandia games, but it lacks much of the nuance of that combat system. There's a level of finesse that can be achieved in Grandia style combat that is not achieved here. It doesn't help that the game is kind of rigged against you in various ways, like the fact that your party consists of two characters, but enemies often attack you in groups of three. So even if you managed to lock down two enemies and prevent them from attacking, that third enemy is going to get his turn and hit you. Lazy, uncreative, cheap game design. I'm sick of designers always finding the easiest, cheapest ways to make a game challenging rather than expand their minds and try something creative. Granted, the game isn't hard if you just want to beat it and don't care about getting through fights with the kind of finesse (i.e. never taking a single hit to your party)that Grandia games offered. I mean, each battle arena has glowing plants that you can use to refill all your health and magic without even using a turn. So...basically, you CAN'T die unless you're REALLY trying.

The story is bland and boring, but I'm hearing this game was meant to played with family, so I guess this was written for little kids, as I can't see it appealing to anyone else. The characters have practically no arcs or characterization and the game is completely unable to elicit even an ounce of emotion from players as a result

Also, the rhyming that makes up all the game's dialog is laughably bad. At one point in the game, the narrator needs to find something that rhymes with instead. So the line prior ends with the word astonished and the narrator pronounces it astoni-"shed".

Apparently, this game was written for kids BY kids

My god, this game feels like a mediocre homebrew game that never should have made it to PSN. It's only redeeming quality is its beautiful 2d visual style, but aren't cheap, indie games with beautiful 2d art styles becoming the norm these days? It doesn't even really grab my attention anymore. It's certainly not enough on its own to make these games stand out anymore. You need good stories and deep gameplay. Child of Light has neither.

I'd probably score it a 6 out of 10 just for it's pretty looks and the fact that it's playable. And they get some kudos for being influenced by Grandia, too bad the combat system is not nearly as good.

Mercenary Kings - PS4

The game looks like a Metal Slug game, but plays a bit more like Mega Man. Sadly, most of the game consists of boring item farming or finding hostages. This leads to lots of boring wandering and backtracking around large, confusing maps that the game keeps reusing over and over again. Enemy designs are bland and boring and the game is not as pretty as Scott Pilgrim (their previous game). The soundtrack is okay, but not that impressive overall. Again, if you compare it to the game's predecessor (Scott Pilgrim), the soundtrack has nothing on anything Anamanaguchi can make.

There's some decent boss fights, but only about a handful, and they get re-used over and over again until you're sick of them. Also, the dbags who made this game thought it would be fun to have bosses run away when their health is low, and they can do this as many times as they want. So it's not uncommon to have to chase a boss ALL AROUND THE GODDAMN MAP....before you can finally kill it.

And this is made even more entertaining by the fact that some parts of a level are blocked off by walls that you can't get past unless you have C4 on you. Oh, and did I mention the stupid weight system? Basically, if you're carrying a gun that is too heavy your character gets weighed down, making his jumps slow and low to the ground. You can just imagine how much fun that makes all of the platforming in the game

Douchebags

Sometimes I swear that designers put certain gameplay mechanics into a game for no other reason than to annoy players.

There's not much else to say about the game. There's tons of weapon parts you can acquire, but given that ever gun part has a drawback to balance out whatever advantage you get, you never feel like you're getting stronger. Same goes with abilities you can equip, they each apply some sort of penalty to your character to go along with whatever perk they give. Lame

Just a mediocre game all around. It's not as focused and linear as a Mega Man game (nor does it have that cool rock/paper/scissors approach to bosses) and it's not as fast paced and crazy as a good Metal Slug game. I don't know what Mercenary Kings is trying to be...other than mediocre

Getting a lot of crappy indie style games on PSN lately :x

 I've played about 10-15 minutes of each of these games ^ - you aren't making me anxious to dive back in to either!

I was pumped for Mercenary Kings given how awesome Wizorb was. Unfortunately, this reminds me much more of their pre-Tribute game Scott Pilgrim, which featured beautifully visualized borrowed elements from classic games but offered an experience that lacked the finely crafted gameplay originally found in those games they were drawing inspiration from.

He also left out that Mercenary Kings is a perfect example of the problems with achievements on Steam. In this case, MK has an achievement you could only earn if you Kickstarted the game. So in effect, you had to pay money while the game was in development to earn an achievement that could only be earned before the game's release and only by those who had the financial capability to give them money...

Scott Pilgrim was def a letdown yeah. Though it was far more successful than its movie counterpart.

I went through all the screens in Donkey Kong on the NES twice last night ... this doesn't count does it? :p

I'm still hammering away at Metroid Prime. This game is a lot longer than I thought it'd be.

Works for me.

I'll probably add the Atari 2600 version to my list eventually. You know, the one where Donkey Kong throws chocolate chip cookies at Mario.

Oh good I'm not alone.

Turned it on for 30 minutes. Turned it off. Haven't touched it since.

What a colossal (if beautiful) waste of $15.

As you said, it's not a bad game. It's just not good either. It's exactly the worst kind of game. It's devoid of anything compelling.

Child of Light looks awesome. Wish it had a physical release on the Vita or something.

1. Mortal Kombat II - 32X
2. Cosmic Carnage - 32X
3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade - XBLA
4. X-men Arcade - XBLA
5. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Hyperstone Heist - Genesis
6. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time - SNES
7. Metroid: Other M - Wii
8. Donkey Kong Country Returns - Wii
9. Metroid Fusion - GBA
10.Star Trek - Xbox 360
11.Fable Anniversary - Xbox 360
12.Ranma 1/2: Chougi Ranbuhen - SFC
13.Sailor Moon R - SFC
14.Super Tempo - Saturn

Oh man, Super Tempo is fun. I'm a big fan of the 32x original ,and the game gear version is decent too, but this is the first time I've beaten the sequel (never passed level 2 in the past) and I loved it.

There's just a ton of variety and interesting elements in the levels and bosses. Really keeps your attention. I also appreciated the new mixes of some songs from the original game.

Its also batshit insane. Which is awesome.
