I thought the same thing too at first, until I changed the settings for the OS to be button controlled. Then I rearranged everything on the UI to be more sensible, and all is well. My only problem left is this crap:
I HATE that every time you start up the Vita you have to touch the screen. I don't enjoy putting finger prints on an otherwise spotless screen, especially considering many Vita games don't require touch input at all. With every OS update I hope they will fix this stupid swipe-to-start crap but alas.
That's the reason for screen protectors

Happened to me, yesterday.
Well, kinda-sorta.
Contra Advance for the GBA -- this had started last week with minimum bid at $9, but the BIN price was $17. No way was I gonna pay that outright (game is trending $10-$20 and up now).
I totally forgot that I had put a bid in for this, but I ended up getting it for around $13. Not bad.

I don't have an issue with the UI, it was clearly modeled after smartphones though and I can see if that's not for everyone.

I'd be curious what genres you feel are missing from the large library on the Vita...

All the ones eu and ja get for classics on vita that we don't(i was lucky to grab spyro during their slip up) seem to get especially a few others. I don't feel like reformatting my vita every time I want something from another region....

So your issue isn't with the selection of modern games, it's with what games are available from PS1 and PSP?

Well and to be honest I probably haven't been paying attention to releases(it just seems like when I do make a trip to gamestop which I did last month, they didn't have many new games that I saw). Though I've been more focused on my other systems for some odd reason and only remembered about my vita sadly when i saw the vita thread >_> I keep meaning to play more of it but just don't for some odd reason...guess I occupied myself when I took a liking to my dad's nes and other old games....

The Vita is a system that never interested me - the 3DS library seems far and away superior, especially for RPGs and quirky titles. The PSP also seems to have a more intriguing library of games for my tastes.
