Again, freedom is overwhelming. The human brain just doesn't work well in the context of total freedom. If you give someone freedom they tend to repeat what they already know. It's not that freedom limits creativity, it's that having reference points even if those are limitations can help you in your creative endeavours.

There's a point where too many restrictions make things harder, but restrictions give you a grounding that an empty canvas does not. Think back to a time when you needed to create something out of thin air. I agree that restrictions pushes creativity. When you look at consoles from the early 90's and prior and see how developers tried every trick to create new stuff with FMV and 3D its amazing. Even the ideas are great. But once you can do whatever, creativity slows down. I am willing to say that if you tell some one to use pencils to create a drawing they will be more creative with it than to tell him create a drawing with anything you want. I think the way this works is that the brain sets a limit mark to what they can do and then try to surpass it, but when you are in total freedom there is no mark to surpass you do not know how far or less you should go. Think breaking world records.
