Square Enix: DRM is a necessary part of doing business and it's here to stay

After the Bravely Default realization and people having a tiny bit of hope in you, you go and say this.

Doesn't bother me. It hasn't prevented me from enjoying games.

They're not wrong, it is the way of the future.

I think that gif is oddly appropriate since DRM isn't going anywhere and Bill Cosby is a cranky old man that has failed to embrace change...

Bill Cosby is still playing his TI-99/4A.

Which I prefer to most modern Square Enix games.

Hey, if SE wants to scare away half its customer base in an age with plenty of gaming alternatives, that's perfectly fine with me.
There are lots of game companies that cater to my sensibilities.

I am not necessary for SE's business and losing my patronage is the cost of doing business. Gamers are (or can be) a fickle breed with temperamental loyalties.

I do wonder what kind of DRM SE has in mind for the future though. Maybe it's not what I'm thinking. I buy games with the question of "will this be playable in 10+ years?". If the answer is no or unclear, I generally stay away.
...and yes, that means no MMO's for me.
...just another lost soul...

You know who else says DRM is here to stay? Valve.

Yea don't pretty much all SE games use valve for DRM? I fail to see how this is a problem. Every major pub uses some form of DRM and valve's is the least intrusive. I mean I at least remember my steam password. uplay and origin? Better send me that email so I can change my password and promptly forget it again.

Ah, but via the Steam service, Valve gives you enough other benefits that the DRM becomes much more palatable, not to mention the massive sales. With many other forms of DRM, you, as the consumer, get NO ADVANTAGE WHATSOEVER over a game that simply lacks DRM.

In order for DRM to truly be successful and well-tolerated by consumers, it must confer advantages to the consumer, not simply take away privileges.

Well, we've all lived through the age of Square-Enix's relevancy. I wish people would stop supporting this brain-sucking, unimaginative and pathetic reflection of their previous form.

Then again I am very curious about Bravely Default!

Petty SE hate aside, I can see how DRM is necessary but its definitely a weak aspect of current gaming. Along with DLC (or rather, the way its usually executed), its a pretty big factor in why I generally don't mess with new games.
