For some odd reason I wouldn't be shocked if that did happen...

The fact that this thing accepts actual carts and has controller ports elevates it way higher than a simple "emulation machine." I don't think it's at all comparable to emulating on a PC or Ouya, for instance. If this thing lives up to the hype it's gonna be phenomenal.

But it does compare... there are tons of SNES/NES USB converters for cheap. This just gives the illusion it is different since you stick a cart in it. And he is proposing to just put an hdd in it, which just further removes the 'ooh it plays off the cart' factor.

.....but you don't need controller converters for this. And the fact that it accepts real carts means you can still "collect" for this system as opposed to just downloading ROMs. Those features push it beyond "oh okay another emulation machine" to "whoa this is cool as shit." Though I understand many will disagree - especially those with plenty of space for their original consoles (which I something I sorely lack).

The fact that isn't real original hardware is immaterial to me honestly. If the compatibility is spot-on then I'm sure I'll prefer playing this vs. my original consoles.

Anyhow, I finally pre-ordered this. Anyone optimistic enough to think that it will be released this month?

oh so you don't need the carts to play the games on it? $100 for a compact little emulation device with built in controller ports would be alot more convenient then buying a dedicated PC to emulate

Also I wonder what would happen if you tried to play an everdrive flash cart on it  Yo dawg I heard you like ROMS so we put some ROMS in your ROMS

I could probably leave a lot of my consoles out but I just hate having so much clutter. The Retron is such an elegant solution and really cuts down on consoles that I need to dust.

I really hope it makes it out this month but I can wait considering I've had my pre-order since September 12, 2013. I've definitely been looking forward to this for quite some time.

Apparently, there is some speculation that Hyperkin might announce the official release date at the Midwest Gaming Classic where they unveiled the Retron a year ago.

You can also use a GBA as a Game Boy Player controller.

He is being a little misleading. It can not play games out of box without a cart.

But it still emulates. It is just restricted to reading the roms off the carts in its current state.

That being said, having an emulation box with hdmi, built in controller converters/ports, and built in cart readers for $100 is a pretty cool package; decent price, and no fuss with set up or customization. But there are other systems that can emulate and more. If one already has a PC or media computer hooked up to their tv, this doesnt offer much different.
