Gamespy shutting down 05-31
Gamespy is shutting down at the end of May. I wonder if that means Borderlands will no longer be able to do multiplayer unless Gearbox releases an update.

The end of an era...
I'm surprized it lasted this long in the face of Steam.
Ah well, better make sure I can recover my digital copy of Bikini Karate Babes!

Does this affect Borderlands 2 on the Xbox 360? or does just the PC version use Gamespy servers?

Well, Just Borderlands 1 would be affected if Gearbox doesn't do something. I don't think 2 uses it anymore, but even if it did, they'll definitely update that one.ninjainspandex wrote:Does this affect Borderlands 2 on the Xbox 360? or does just the PC version use Gamespy servers?

Some other internet fora are postulating that the DC titles were dropped in an earlier round of server shutdowns. I would be a bit surprised if they were still up and running this late in the game.noiseredux wrote:fudge! This could be doom for DC games Starlancer, Max Pool, and 4x4 Evo.

Oh fantastic.
They were responsible for a lot of CD authentication on PC too and other back-end crap outside of multiplayer.

I know for a fact that those games do still work online.marurun wrote:Some other internet fora are postulating that the DC titles were dropped in an earlier round of server shutdowns. Also, I asked the question over on Dreamcast-Talk, and:
4x4, starlancer, and max pool can all be hosted independently of gamespy. DC-Talk already hosts its own 4x4 and max pool servers. The server software/setup for starlancer was reverse engineered a number of years ago (http://dreamcast.onlineconsoles.com/php ... php?t=6567)
The only game GameSpy actually hosts is Starlancer. 4x4 EVO allowed you to sign into a GameSpy account and see your friends list but it wasn't actually hosted by them. The official server was hosted by Terminal Reality until last year when they shut the server down. Hopefully the private server for Starlancer will be up and running soon so we have a smooth transition.
