NES Controller Modding

Post by Snatch1414 »

I figured it's a pretty simple architecture in the NES controller so I was wondering what kind of mods were out there. If I google it I keep getting results to turn an NES controller into something else. I was thinking more along the lines of an LED mod I saw. I am hesitant to do this because peeling back the overlay is something I'd most assuredly screw up and cutting a nice rectangle in the plastic might not go so well either. I was thinking more on the internal/electrical side, or something with the exterior that didn't involve stabbing the controller.

Maybe there's just not that many things you can do with it, but figured I'd ask in case I wasn't Googling 'right'. Thanks

As a Christmas present for my brother I bought off of Ebay an NES controller that had been modded to be a USB controller as well as a 4GB flash card. I then loaded it up with roms and Nestopia so it was a mobile emulator/controller. Don't ask me how to make one.

:? Not sure what you mean by this unless you are adding a different overlay?
The screws are underneath in the back of the gamepad.

How about hooking it up to the Wiimote? Also 2600 Joysticks.

My exerience with it is converting to and from other controllers using adapters. You can get a NES to USB adapter from Retrozone. You can get a PS2 to NES from Tototec and use any other by chaining adapters...

I started NES controller LED modding a while back, but had to put it on hold for a long while. I posted a couple pics of a Castlevania LED mod here:

First, don't worry about peeling back the overlay, just go for it. It will stick right back and it's pretty tough, you won't damage it.

As far as cutting the controller open, I mostly did it with a Dremel. I tried using a laser cutter a couple times, but he ABS plastic caught fire. Probably less power with more passes would do it, but I haven't had time to go back for more. I've considered having cuts in areas that are not underneath the overlay, either by more careful laser cutting, extremely careful and polished Dremel work, or resin casting new controllers entirely.

Putting LEDs in is easy as can be, just google a labeled PCB picture to see where to solder. I read that you can only put so many LEDS in before you draw too much power and the controller becomes less responsive. Makes sense but I've no idea how many or what kind before you get to that limit.

What LED mod did you see?
