These are assuming you call Skyrim a 3rd person game (I wouldn't)
2010 top 5 = 2 FPS games. CoD is number 1
2011 top 5 = 2 FPS games. CoD is number 1.
2012 top 5 = 2 FPS games. CoD is number 1.
2013 top 5 = 2 FPS games. Cod is number 2, GTAV is number one.

Yeah..... I don't see a decline of FPS.

Its in DECLINING , its not declined yet. I am guessing only though... I imagine some new genre will take over in 2018. You will still see FPS in top 10s, but their #1 place would be taken. It takes a lot of time for a genre to take over. Platformers lasted something like 1985 -> '96 . Halo on consoles relased in 2001/2 I think, it wasn't until about 2007 when Modern Warfare was released that FPS on consoles were going crazy. Not sure what was the dominant genre in ps2 era, it sure was not FPS though.

Thing is, are you thinking shooters specifically, or first person gaming in general?

I doubt the latter is on the way out, particularly with the interest in VR as of late.

I hear what you're saying, I just don't see that you've provided any evidence supporting it. If you're simply arguing that someday it won't be as popular as it has been.... well sure that's probably true. But I don't seen any signs in the current marketplace.

I mean shooters yes. I wouldn't consider Minecraft FPS in my vocabulary even though it is.

@Phades

I am not arguing to make my point valid, I am stating my opinion and future thoughts. When I said it was going to decline I mean next-gen. PS4 and XboxOne I am expecting to see a new dominating genre. I guess the PS3/360 FPS clearly won.

Well those that enjoyed the 3d platformers of the n64/gc era have chosen fps's now over anything else and that's all they wanna play still... Personally I don't see why that genre has to be so overused in all the popular games. Why not some combinations(especially some weird ones) that haven't been done by a popular studio. That right there is what I want to see. Or even a return to the original spyro, and jak and daxter type game era. I love and miss games like that but rpgs are great as well but we never see many unusual combinations of genres now.

I would like to see more games in the underwater genre, the side-scrolling action adventure genre (ala Dragon's Crown), and a return to turn-based RPGs. With PSN, Arcade, and VC, I'm not sure there's much demand for these genres in the mainstream audience though.

I have never seen a multi-genre game that works. Usually if you have a platformer it might have a side-quest or a level where there might be an FPS, but its more of to put variety in the game. I can't recall any game that was a great shooter and a great racer, or a great platformer and a great RTS.

My guess is that it has something to do with programming, or having to add an extra genre that works just as good as the main one is like putting the effort of creating 2 games into one.

Personally, I would like to experience a game where you would for example can fly a battleship in space and then when you land on a planet you turn into an RTS like Starcraft. I guess thats an example of combination genre

There's a lot of those, especially in the indie-space.

Also, Uncharted, Mass Effect, The Elder Scrolls, Borderlands, Adventures of Link, (List goes on) are ALL hybrid genre games.

Then there's also the "sandbox" realm of games, that are extreme hybrids. Grand Theft Auto, Sleeping Dogs, and Assassin's Creed all have genre-hybrid designs.

I want a damn AAA 2D (or 2.5D) side-scrolling Metroid-Vania title! Enough with the FPS's!

Shadow Complex 2 anyone? Companies need to take the formula that Nintendo did with New Super Mario Bros Wii, and apply that to some older IP's. At this point in time, can really only think of Nintendo games I'd like to see..... but still. Shadow Complex 2!
