What was the last movie you've seen?

It's also pretty meh, though watching an invisible demon urinate blood in a men's room was pretty funny.

This movie throws a lot at the viewer in its attempts at humor, and a lot of it falls flat, but I admit that there are moments where I laughed because suddenly something so utterly ridiculous or unexpected occurred. But it's like a shotgun blast of parody attempts, and for each one that works, there's plenty that don't hold up, like the Jewish security system during the Mission Impossible parody sequence. There's just too many attempts which appear to be solely for the sake of trying, like the generally pointless Star Wars references. But when gold strikes, it strikes hard, like the scene with Leslie Nielsen running from the toy plane in a North by Northwest parody. And a few of the gags become more funny just based on how long they hold out, like the dropped coffee cup after the Usual Suspects parody or the train that chases Nielsen. If they had pulled out a lot of the chaff, the film would have been much better in my opinion. It just tried way too much and too rarely hits its mark in my opinion.

Still, I'm glad they explained that thing with the coat in the credits. That would have haunted me.

We had a family movie night this weekend, and since I now have veto power over my children's picks, we watched:

The Little Norse Prince (1968). It is a very early, but nonetheless beautifully animated, Japanese film. Some legends of Japanes animation - including Hayao Miyazaki - worked on this film, and their influence on it is apparent. (The stone giant Mogue a/k/a Roguar certainly appears like something out of a Hayao Miyazaki film, and some of the sequences with the villain, Grunwald, also evidence his involvement in the project.) Moreover, the characters are interesting (by children's cartoon standards); the action sequences are very exciting (by any standard); and the story is compelling. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I recommend it to: (1) anyone looking for a family-friendly, non-Disney animated feature; and (2) anyone interested in anime's origins.

My only complaint is that the film streaming on Netflix appears to be a VHS transfer, and I think some of the film's original beauty may be lost to time (i.e., the aspect ratio was off, the colors were faded, etc.) I sincerely hope that, at some point, the film receives a proper restoration and a world-wide Blu-Ray or DVD release. (Apparently, physical copies of the film are not available in North America.)

You said a mouthful. WRONGFULLY ACCUSED is 75% and 25%

I admit that I lol'd when the usher used a lightsaber. It was quick and witty. By no stretch is it as good as the NAKED GUN series, but for those who like to study gag humor, it's an excellent film for "what works and what doesn't". It's very HOT SHOTS when it comes to its gags.

I re-watched Secret of Nimh for the hundredth time today.

This is a surprisingly complex animated movie. That's not to say it's necessarily a great story. I give Bluth credit for telling the story out of order, but the denouement is still a big magical deus ex machina in the end. Then again, animated movies don't always need to have a great story. Secret of Nimh was a showcase of Bluth's technical prowess in animation. Here, Bluth makes his mark as the greatest animator of 1982.

What strikes me when I watch Secret of Nimh is that the filmmakers take the time to explain why there are talking mice and rats.
Through flashback, it is revealed that the National Institute of Mental Heath (N.I.M.H.) conducted a series of experiments on lab animals. One group of rats and mice grew smarter after being injected with an unnamed serum. They use their increased mental capacity to learn to read and escape from captivity.
In most animated movies, the audience gets no explanation why there are talking animals. We take for granted the convention that animals can talk in animated movies.

It works better as a comedy. I saw it with a friend back when it was in theaters and neither of us could stop laughing at Jason re-entering the planet's atmosphere.

I need to find a movie for my girlfriend. It's something she watched as a kid. I've googled and come up with nothing. You guys and gals have pretty eclectic tastes so I wonder if you can help.

Here's the description she gave me: It's about a little girl with dark hair who kills dragons and cuts out their spleens (possibly hearts). The dragons are of the chinese Shenron style. There are water versions at one point. It may be called Little Nayer or Nayo? Ring any bells?

There are some caveats that have impeded my search: She saw it when she lived in Arabia in the late eighties. It was on betamax. It may be a pirated version of something more famous owing to these two factors. She may have dreamed it.

EDIT: It's an animation. Probably should have mentioned that bit first.

Is it animated or live action?

Good but it's pretty slow, but thankfully the visuals are... typical Ghibli.
