You don't have to do it.

However if you want to upgrade your character, you have to constantly watch the animation of picking up loot, opening windows, picking locks, etc. I am talking liek in a small area that takes you 5 minutes to clear you have to open 4 windows, pick the lock of 5 boxes all while watching the pick up animation for everything you find. Finish that small section, move onto the next.

Again, I am enjoying the game, but it does get old fast with the stupid animations.

I had a feeling the grabbing animation would get old.

Hell yea. Deadly Shadows is a huge favorite of mine so it's awesome to see the concept fleshed out so much more.

I don't find myself bothered with the windows or lock picking.. those are things I like about this game.. Well, before there were windows anyway - I totally dug the lock picking in Deadly Shadows and seeing the same mechanic carried over is great. I almost wish the pry bar was a tool you had to buy, but whatever. And the grabbing animation doesn't bother me either, it's a nice addition in the way of body awareness and I can't say it slows me down at all.

(I find myself missing the lock picking in recent Splinter Cells.. so maybe I just enjoy that sort of stuff more than others)

I got as far as the 3rd chapter, then went over some friends' house this past weekend and played it all over again on their PS4 (they have 2 adjacent tv's in their living room - gaming fun) and now I'm back home ready to tackle the brothel. Guess I'll stop back in with updates for any curious folks when I get more done.

Bought the XB1 version, I only have tonight to play it for a bit, but I'll let you know what I find!

Just put about 2 hours into it on PC. My first impressions are that it's a solid game. Even holds up as a Thief game. I'd also agree with the comments comparing it to a more developed Deadly Shadows. I got used to the new voice actor pretty quickly, and the story is passable and seems pretty entertaining. The stealth and gameplay are hard, but not too hard, and I'm playing on the normal difficulty without the use of Focus.

Two things that I miss from previous installments are the ability to flatten against walls, and the zoom ability using the mechanical eye. But surprisingly I like the swoop, which feels less gimmicky than Blink did in Dishonored. I haven't felt forced to utilize take-downs either, and they don't seem to be overly emphasized if you prefer to play a pacifist. It's also been a fairly immersive game, except for a portion where I was climbing and the camera changed to third person. That said, I'd say I'm satisfied with it as a sequel, and interested to see where it goes from here.

Played a couple hours last night as well. I'm playing the XB1 version and I have to say I'm a little disappointed with the models, just not that impressive. Not sure if that has something to do with the simultaneous release with previous gen consoles or what.

Gameplay is solid though, as Wispmage said. Feels like an updated Thief. I'm playing on Master difficulty, which means you can't knock out civilians and you really need to steal everything you can find because things cost a little more. I didn't turn off Focus, but I don't use it, it just doesn't seem necessary.

I like the Swoop too, but I had a funny thing happen with it when I first started. Apparently you don't get the ability until a little ways into the Prologue, but I was going along, hunky dory, and suddenly Garrett starts swooping with every action (at the time I hadn't been introduced to the ability so I didn't know what it was) and I thought that was just how he moved and I HATED it, I was like I ... how can I even be stealthy ... I don't even, what? I know that this game is super customizable, so I went to the menus and decided to see if I could turn it off. Found out that it was the Kinect picking up "body motion" as a command to swoop. This is on by default. Default, really? Anyway apparently the way I was sitting said to Kinect "swoop and don't ever stop."

The story seems interesting and kind of stupid at the same time, so we'll see how that goes.

I hate to do it, but someone would eventually so...

How do you guys think it compares to Dishonored?

Dishonored was fantastic and one of my favorites, but still nothing compared to the old Thief games for me. I'm hoping this is more atmospheric or always dark/night like it should be, and just all around more true stealth with less gimmicky abilities.

I think Dishonored did everything better myself, the only thing Thief has going for it over Dishonored is the game is far more stealth orientate. Dishonored looks better has a better story a more interesting set of mechanics and allows you to play stealth if you want or just flat out attack (Thief allows this somewhat but it really pushes you towards stealth).

I really enjoyed Dishonored as well, and the comparison is of course an inevitable one. After about 5 hours of play, I can confidently tell you that it is more atmospheric, is always dark/night, and does indeed emphasize stealth over combat. The gimmicky abilities aren't offered either, though I'm playing with Focus disabled, so there may be some that I'm just not seeing / using.

Really? I feel like on a technical level Thief looks far better, considering Dishonored came out a few years ago. But if you mean general aesthetics and atmosphere, that I can understand.

There's a lot to do in this game and I'm have a lot of fun doing it. I'm just shy of 30 hours in and I'm only on Chapter 5. The City is insanely elaborate.. ninja-ing around and robbing every apartment I can find is great.. The side missions are a blast too. Going back over my fellow Thief-friends' house tonight. Thief party!
