Do you usually buy MMOs to try the free trial? Or, did you just buy it because it said "Final Fantasy"?
Both.
They were also insanely cheap.
I really wish you could play the main stories offline. Phantasy Star Online is the only series that seems to get this (yes I know those are "real" MMOs, whatevs).
I consider PSO to be more in the realms of Diablo or Monster Hunter than MMOs, yeah. I tend to enjoy those more than MMOs, and playing them offline makes me enjoy the game enough to consider hopping online with my character.
I think, if you just played the "story" in most MMOs... you'd be even more underwhelmed. Lots and lots of lore, to a world that you really won't end up all that attached to.
It likely depends. I think the online Final Fantasy games have a lot more of what people seem to want out of Final Fantasy, in terms of story/characters at least.
They'd be difficult to turn into single player games that'd appeal to more than people who already know them though. Pacing just isn't the same, and XI in particular is just not designed to tell players very much, in order to encourage player communication.

Yeah, PSO is more dungeon crawler based even though it is called an MMO, it's more like Diablo than it is WOW.

ARR is such an improvement over original and even has a good story and solo content. I would play it if I had the time.

Are the dailies or whatever they added in 2.1 actually good? I mean, you could solo XP with FATES and all when I last played, but it got real old. Otherwise, solo play was extremely limited compared to XI (much less dual boxed XI ).

No idea, havent played in a few months. I hardly did any fates, but I know once you start swapping jobs it becomes necessary.
The only MMO I have played that had an engaging storyline that I could play by myself (even though I was still online) was The Secret World. You had quests that would require you to research using the internet and required critical thinking, but was not so hard that you relied on others to play. Sure there were quests where you may have to get help from people, they weren't totally necessary. I went through the main campaign without any help and loved every second of it.
I am not a huge MMO fan as I find the genre to have huge issues in the long term of gameplay, but for this game...tons of fun.
