I've never been able to find the first game for a reasonable price. And a JRPG published by Midway? So random...

Wait what is Shadow Hearts II? I have Covenant and From the New World, but have yet to play them.

Re: RPG Progress Report
Shadow Hearts: Covenant is Shadow Hearts II. No idea why they put Shadown Hearts: Covenant on the box, when you play the game the title screen says Shadow Hearts II, and that is the name of the game in Japan.
So yeah, those three are all of them (Well, and Koudelka, so 4 I guess)
The first game is neat, pretty unique little gem, but the 2nd game is flushed out. Like many say, "Its Shadow Hearts with a Final Fantasy budget"
Agreed on the Midway thing. I really didn't expect much when I played the first game.

Re: RPG Progress Report
Midway should have made an RPG back in the 80s full of fast cars and guns and shit. Would have been amazing.
I'll get to those Shadow Hearts games eventually. JRPG stories are so incoherent that I'm sure skipping the first game won't matter much.
I was looking through my collection last night - I'd like to tackle Thousand Arms, Xenogears, and Lost Kingdoms this year. It all depends on what we pick for Together RPG, as I like to play those games too. That reminds me, I still need to finish start Ogre Battle.

Re: RPG Progress Report
I've always wanted to play Thousand Arms too.
Its hard to say if you should skip the first game. The first two games (at least, havent played the third) share the same main character, and a lot of smaller characters, so it feels a little more coherent than most jrpgs. And, the whole point of the section of the game that I am in revolves around a past character that you are looking for.
The 2nd game is just so much better that I would say, if you only ever play one, play that one. However, if you are willing to play through the series, the 2nd game is even better having played the first.

Re: RPG Progress Report
Sorry to go back to the superboss discussion, but on reflection, I can understand why people like them. I just blew through all bosses in the final section of FF9 and I can see the need for a boss with extra challenge.
It also sends you to guides or FAQs and parts of the game you wouldn't usually go to. My main problem is the prize for beating most of them isn't worth it. Getting a gold chocobo for beating Ruby weapon is like getting a Chevy for winning the superbowl. Kind of pointless.
I was being a massive hypocrite anyway, as I spent LOTS of time grinding skills in Skyrim to get a legendary dragon to appear.

All I can hear right now is the battle theme for encounters outside Daguerreo. Thanks, guys.
I've never really understood playing an FF game only to not bother with secret bosses. It's not like the stories are worth much. Finding and collecting everything to become an unholy 3-6 person army is probably the only validating part of most RPGs. Who plays FFIX to not get a 5 minute summon that requires boosting through the entire attack for extra damage? Certainly not anyone I want to be friends with.
Speaking of Thousand Arms, I bought it a while ago, and played a little bit of it to test it out. I always had this image of the game as something similar to the original Grandia, and that was promptly shattered with the first 3 minutes of playing Thousand Arms. It's just so— anime. And not a good one. It might be a good game, but I'm in no rush to get to it.

Beat the elite 4 in Pokémon Heartgold last night. My mission is still to catch the remaining 6 pokémon I need for my Diamond pokédex - Mewtwo, Raikou, Entei, Suicune, Lugia and Latias. I can catch 2 of those now, but I have to get through the Kanto gyms for the other 4.

Had a few fail jobs tonight at the Fanatic's Tower, but I got through it. All I have left to do is recruit Gogo, defeat Hidon, maybe have some more people learn magic, and then head for Kefka's Tower.
Re: RPG Progress Report
Playing Bravely Default, currently stuck before the Swordmaster boss. Right now he's just outputting way too much damage, and his counters (which I can't anticipate) will one shot my guys.

Re: RPG Progress Report
I almost got Bravely Default when I was out shopping yesterday. I can't believe they used the little fairy for the box art instead of the party shot.
