Apparently you hadn't seen any of the teasers that have been floating around. All the ones that crossed my radar made it out to have the good mix of kid/adult entertainment. I don't know if I'll find anyone that wants to go see it with though.dsheinem wrote:OMG The Fucking LEGO Movie
I really expected to dislike it as the ads have not sold it well at all as something that adults will appreciate. I went because the four year old was stoked, but I have no doubt I was more emotionally invested and was enjoying it even more than he was by the end of the film. It is shockingly GREAT.
And it should make a mint.

I saw 2-3 of the trailers over the last 6 months or so (mostly in theaters) and felt that the jokes in them were a bit forced or obvious or kiddie. I'm pretty hard to please when it comes to comedy in a kid's movie, and I was expecting more Cars or Monsters Inc-level stuff. I found the film to be a lot funnier, darker, richer, and better than it was letting on.Hobie-wan wrote:Apparently you hadn't seen any of the teasers that have been floating around. I would see this, but since one (otherwise very positive) review has stated that:dsheinem wrote:OMG The Fucking LEGO Movie

"The only real bone to pick with The Lego Movie is that the gender disparity of the toys themselves—a pervasive criticism of the brand—has carried over to the film’s major characters."
I am certain that my wife would make so many pointed observations regarding the persistent sexism in children's entertainment, that any joy I derived from the film would be drained completely.

The fact that you're using Monsters Inc as an example of humor that you were expecting to see and be disappointed with proves my long standing thesis that you're a joyless man.dsheinem wrote:I saw 2-3 of the trailers over the last 6 months or so (mostly in theaters) and felt that the jokes in them were a bit forced or obvious or kiddie. Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
I don't know - the film is really about a lot of interesting contradictions and, importantly, an awareness of those contradictions (e.g. it is critical about big business when it is also clearly a giant commercial vehicle for LEGOs itself). This extends to its gender politics, in my view. It's certainly a film that is more "male focused" I guess, but so are the bulk of LEGO lines that get included in the film (Pirates, Super Heroes, construction workers, LOTR, medieval castles, etc.), so it is hard not to be. There's a toss-off/punchline joke towards the end that I think is more about age than gender (though it is about both), but on the other hand there's some pretty interesting explorations about problematic masculine norms, gendered power dynamics in relationships, etc.prfsnl_gmr wrote: I would see this, but since one (otherwise very positive) review has stated that:

I think you could take your wife to see it under the pretense of "so I hear that there's some interesting gender stuff going on here that would be worth seeing and discussing, plus it is funny and awesome" and leave it at that. It certainly isn't a revolution in how kid's entertainment (or toys) is conceptualized (as grounded in gender norms), but there's more going on there than that line from the review is giving it credit for.

Oh my. The Lego Movie.
I'm watching it and I'm picturing all the animators regressing to their young childhood. Their lives have come full circle. They grew up making things with Lego, then graduated to big boy toys (Maya/3D Studio Max), and now they're playing with Lego again. And the sheer joy it brings them comes across in everything the film does.
Plus, Billy Dee Williams.

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?

4th time I watch this film and I am still amazed by it. Spielberg truly crafted a masterful film which captures the spirit of the original comic books (goofiness, action, adventure and mystery) while bringing them to modern standards (the comics probably don't stand up as well today, and the action is boring by today's hyper active standards).
And the 3 grand set pieces are as always amazingly entertaining to watch, specially all the small details going on in the background.
I can't wait for the second film to come out.

Guys:
THE DISASTER ARTIST is going to be amazing. Or just good. Or both. But either way I'm looking forward to it.
Wanna hear something awesome? Too bad. But I will tell you I have an in with Lucasfilm Ltd. My lips must remain sealed, but if you can read between the lines (sorry, but most of you here don't or can't) hints may be dropped under an umbrella of generalities (see? even that might be a clue).
Watched MEAN GIRLS on the big screen for the first time since it was released. There is nothing not to love about this movie. Plus, it hasn't aged at all. If noise and I have ever agreed 100% on one thing, it's that MEAN GIRLS is an instant classic.

I totally forgot about this movie, I wanted to watch it. There a lot of old and new releases in software, games, movies, tv shows that you just skip on a lot of them.ZeroAX wrote:
