The best game on PSP is Outrun 2006 Coast 2 Coast.
Please trust me on this one.
Absolutely perfect arcade racing experience.

Re: soo...what to get for the psp?
Aw really? Well that's cool. If you don't like arcade style racers then you won't be into it.
Let's see... other games that I like are :
Crush - really fantastic puzzler. Well received by critics.
Afterburner - Solid arcade fun (again...arcade so I don't know how you'll receive that)
Jeanne D'Arc - fantastic strategy RPG with high production values.
Sonic Rivals - Call me crazy, but I like these games for some reason.
Oh and Sega Genesis collection is a really slick package for retro gaming on the go.

MG Portable Ops is pretty good, kinda hard to find. I play MLB the Show 08, and have played through both of the GTA games, which were fun while they lasted. Daxter is ok I guess, hasnt really held my attention though. Secret Agent Clank is also supposed to be ok if you like that type of game.
I recommend getting CFW if you can, the loading times can be killer with some games, and the battery life is kinda short when playing off of UMDs. I have CFW on one of my PSPs and load the games I own onto a memory stick, loading and battery life are much improved. Plus with CFW you can play all of the classics through roms if you find that ethical.

Re: soo...what to get for the psp?
Disgaea is another great strategy rpg. It's currently the best version of the game(even outdoing the Nintendo DS port)
Daxter is said to be a great platform game.
God of War:Chains of Olympus-I rented and played a bit of this then bought a copy off Amazon last Friday. It's pretty much on par with the original God of War on the PS2 though it's a separate entry in the series.
Crisis Core-A prequel to Final Fantasy 7 that has gotten good reviews and good word of mouth on forums I've been to
Grand Theft Auto:Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories-Like Chains of Olympus, they seem to do a good job of emulating their PS2 counterparts and are also separate entries in the franchise
Mega Man:Maverick Hunter X-I didn't like it at first due to some changes to the gameplay, but overall it is a solid Mega Man X game.
I have played Valkyrie Profile and FF:Tactics:War of the Lions and they are fantastic. There are some unfortunate porting issues that you should know about if you want to buy them, but they are highly exaggerated. The so-called slowdown in War of the Lions is something I never even noticed though many people bitch about it. The only issue I have with the game is the sound effects don't quite sound right and are occasionally out of sync, but Tactics never was a game known for its amazing sound effects, just its great soundtrack, which is intact. There tons of extra content both in gameplay and story to make up for some minor porting issues and a fantastic new localization job that makes the story more coherent.
Valkyrie Profile's only real issue is the image is stretched out at times to fit the widescreen. Make things a bit blurry looking. That's about it. Again there are complaints of slowdown, but I haven't noticed it. Everyone says it takes eons to go into the menu screen, but I've been in and out quickly many times. Sometimes I think people make this shit up. The new CGI scenes are gorgeous and they even added some to parts of the game that had no cutscenes. I just pointed this stuff out because there are some people pissed with how these two games were ported. They're not perfect, but the complaints people have are very, very exaggerated. I thought you should be aware of them though before buying
Oh, and I second the CFW recommendation. Plenty of people can explain it all to you if you have questions. It's great for lots of things(including getting rare items in FF Tactics:War of the Lions without having to play the dumb multi-player mode)

Re: soo...what to get for the psp?
Dude man beat me to it... but Crush is amazing. I don't own a PSP though, because I can't warrant buying one just for one title.
Kinda like the PS3, I want to play Little Big Planet, but come on... really. Though my brother is moving down here soon and bringing his... I'll get to play it then!

I'm surprised no one's brought up Star Ocean yet. It's been a lot of fun so far, though you can make yourself a bit overpowered once you figure out how the crafting system works.
