What a fantastic game. Nintendo basically took all the things that I liked about Mario 3D Land for the 3DS and expanded them. The gameplay is absolutely solid - I can really get behind a challenging game where it's obvious that I died because I wasn't yet good enough, not because of bad game design or poor programming.

What really struck me was how epic the atmosphere of the game was. In particular, the boss levels made me feel like something serious was about to happen or that a lot was at stake. It was also particularly pleasing to use Princess Toadstool for the final levels - The lady deserved some revenge after all the time's she's been kindapped by King Koopa.

I still have the bonus worlds to explore but for now I'm going to take a break and mop those up later.
How would you say it compares to the Galaxy games? I thought those were the best Mario games in a decade or more, but the 3DS Mario 3D, while fun, felt like a step backwards in level design. I chalked it up to the limits of the platform...

Sorry don't want your question to Flake to get lost, but did you play 3D Land past the first 8 worlds? IMO, the level design/challenge is much better and exciting in the 8 special stages.
Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.

I think that where 3D Land was a compromise between Mario Galaxy and the realities of a handheld (even one as awesome as the 3DS), 3D World feels like it is off in its own little world. I would actually say that 3D Land has more in common with Super Mario Bros. 2 US than Mario Galaxy and that's not a bad pedigree to have at all.

Mario 3D World feels like a 3D Land where the developers got everything they wanted, made no compromises, and had a slamming budget. In execution it takes the art style of 3D Land, the perfect level design of Mario Galaxy (minus gravity tricks), the flexibility of gameplay of Super Mario Bros 2, the powers of Super Mario Bros 3, the zany ness of Super Mario Land 2, and the difficulty of Super Mario Bros Wii U.

I know all of that is like defining a word by using the word in the definition but I can't think of any better way to describe it. It's a fantastic game.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

That's about as well as anybody can describe it.

I'd certainly put it up there with Galaxy Dave. I wasn't a huge fan of 3D Land either but 3D World is really something special.

Mario 3D World is amazing. I liked it more than Galaxy, but just be aware that it is far more simple - it doesn't have the epic scale of Galaxy, it's just pure simple mario fun.

Woah some people have beaten so many games already o-o I'm pretty slow, but I want to try and clean up my backlog this year... Not really as a resolution or anything (or else I won't do it lol) but more just trying to encourage myself to finish more ha.

Anyways, what I've beaten so far...
1/6: Dear Esther (Steam) - Not really my kind of game :/ Bit boring for me.
1/11: Hydrophobia: Prophecy (Steam) - Promising, but cuts off too quickly :<
1/26: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (DS) - I'm awful at figuring out anything, but the dialogue was enjoyable for me. I probably wouldn't of minded if it was a straight of visual novel haha The cases felt a little too long for my liking though...

And here's hoping I don't get horribly distracted this year! :D (like what usually happens)

Yup. Have been since 2013. And when I do play my 360, it's been Sleeping Dogs.

But there will be a day where I wake up and state "Today is the day I beat Bioshock Infinite", and I will do so. Today isn't that day.
