Separate RAM and VRAM has been a thing on PCs for 20 years now. The problem was that the more popular console had unified RAM, so everything was designed with that in mind.

Sorry but you are wrong mate :/. Not only is the leap in graphics much smaller this generation (diminishing returns and whatnot), but the PS3 also has REALLY stupid architecture which would be VERY hard to emulate with software. Specially that CELL chip

I am speaking spec wise , not one screen graphics output and how much difference you can see. As I said I can be wrong, but thats how it looks to me.

The split memory wasn't the issue ... the fact that the GPU was under powered, it had a very small amount of VRAM in comparison and the CPU cluster had to help prep graphics work was.

However, when stuff was make specifically for it, it was able to do a lot.

I've been playing a lot of PS3 lately. I have one PS4 game and it's OK (Killzone). I'm sure when Uncharted, Infamous, and MGS5 hit, this will change.

I love how when the Wii U came out, a mere couple of months into its life, people were bitching there were no games (and on the contrary, the games released in the launch lineup were pretty damn good), yet there seems to be no bitching, mainstream wise, about the lack of games for the foreseeable future for the PS4 and XB1.

I mean, the first game to come out for both consoles, since the launch, is Tomb Raider "the definite version" coming out January 28th, and it's nothing but an enhanced port of a game I've had since last year and have completed. The games people are raving about aren't out for months yet. In Destiny's case, people will have to wait till September for its release. Many games don't even have estimated release dates.

I really don't mind much, but I just find it funny people were quick to jump on the Wii U for lack of games. To be honest, in the first 2 months, I played the Wii U way more than I've played my PS4.

So, Sony announced PS Now, which allows you to play previous Playstation games using Gaikai. It can apparently be on a game by game basis, or through a subscription.

My question is, would it allow you to play games you already own by registering the disk or something like that? They haven't said anything, but I would be interested if they did something like that.

2 things:

1) Specially for the PS4, the hardware alone is really impressive (specially for that price) so people don't complain cause it feels next-gen (I'm playing devil's advocatre here)

2) The mainstream gaming media are shit and they DEPEND on the next-gen being succesful. They don't know how to cover indie games, they don't know how to cover casual games and they don't know how to cover PC games. They NEED the xbone and PS4 to be succesful so they can survive in their current form. I just remember how much crazy coverage and how many STUPID features gametrailers made for the Xbone and PS4 releases (videos like "top 5 things sony shouldn't do"......), to make them seem like a bigger deal than they are.

Yeah, you're right on both of those points. Although, I must say as much as the PS4 feels next gen, it's all down to its brilliant interface, that vastly improves on the PS3's. Gameplay wise, I haven't played anything that feels "next gen" yet (but I know early titles are often like that). The only game I'm still playing is Assassin's Creed 4, a last gen game.

Nope.

Wii U
Nov 18 - Launch (23 games)
Nov 19-Dec 14 - 8 games
Dec 15 - March 17 - 1 game <<---this was the problem

PS4
Nov 22 - Launch (23 games)
Dec 3 - Escape Plan
Dec 10 - Doki-Doki Universe
Dec 17 - The Pinball Arcade (retail, too)
Jan 7 - Don't Starve

Xbox 1
Nov 29 - Launch (22 games)
Dec 9 - Peggle 2
Dec 20 - Max: Curse of the Brotherhood
Dec 24 - Halo: Spartan Assault

wouldn't be shocked to see another game or two on each of the new consoles before TR, either. The problem is one of sustaining momentum through the late winter (a time where few games come out anyway). The Wii U did not do this.

Most of the console reviews seemed to indicate the lack of games yet, and there are plenty of consumers that have indicated they're holding off on purchasing until more games hit (and some aren't really that far off, like MGSV: Ground Zeroes and Titanfall in March, Watch_dogs in Q2, and so on). It's not really an angle that's been ignored entirely.

Past that, the PS4 and Xbox One are very straightforward systems. With the Wii U, press and consumers were looking for things to justify the design decisions, or that indicated a change from the Wii era with regard to third party support/etc. Sales faltered early, whereas Sony and MS are seeing strong sales - the PS4 is already at what, 80% of the Wii U's install base after two months?

There's just little question that those systems can and will host the kinds of titles they give most of the coverage to. Were sales poor, I'm sure we'd see more articles pointing out lack of software as a reason, but they aren't.

Sorry, I meant retail games. And I was citing what I had read on another article. If I was wrong, I will hold my hands up and admit perhaps I should have looked into it further myself.

I'm also talking as someone from the UK. I think there may be some difference in our release schedules (The Pinball Arcade, for example, is listed as a January 31st release here). Just from looking on Wikipedia I can see the Wii U also had more than just one game released between Dec 15 and March 17 here, although I admit there was a bit of a drought. You're right, that was certainly the point where it became a problem for the Wii U. So I guess we'll see how the PS4 fares in that time period.

BTW, thanks for bringing to my attention the fact Don't Starve has been ported to the PS4. I had no idea. I hope it's out in Europe and we don't have to wait. I'll look now...
